Unrealistic optimism and health related behaviour

Abstract:

The diploma thesis examines the concept of unrealistic optimism in relation to the found factors of health related behaviour. Secondary goal is to observe the effect of demographic and personality characteristics on the degree of unrealistic optimism. The sample consists of 1468 respondents, aged 20 – 93 years (M=37,7, SD=15,85), out of which 68,1% are females. We confirmed the association between unrealistic optimism and mental well-being, while the association with risk behaviour was not found. Hierarchical regression analysis showed, that the degree of optimism bias can not be considered a significant predictor of health related behaviour. We found, that the unrealistic optimism is not influenced by gender and decreases with growing age, while the respondents older than 65 years showed no optimistic bias about negative events. We confirmed the correlations between the scales of unrealistic optimism and personality characteristics of GPP-I, with small relationships (r< ,150). The ending of the thesis consists of discussion of the findings with suggestions of further research along with options for application.

Diplomová práca skúma koncept nerealistického optimizmu vo vzťahu ku zisteným faktorom správania súvisiaceho so zdravím. Sekundárnym zámerom je sledovanie vplyvu demografických a osobnostných charakteristík na mieru nerealistického optimizmu. Výskumný súbor sa skladá z 1468 respondentov vo veku od 20 do 93 rokov (M=37,7; SO=15,85), z toho 68,1% tvoria ženy. Potvrdili sme vzťah medzi nerealistickým optimizmom a duševnou pohodou, zatiaľ čo vzťah s rizikovým správaním nebol nájdený. Hierarchickou regresnou analýzou sme zistili, že miera optimistického skreslenia nemôže byť považovaná za významný prediktor správania súvisiaceho so zdravím. Zistili sme, že miera nerealistického optimizmu nie je ovplyvnená pohlavím a klesá s rastúcim vekom, pričom respondenti starší 65 rokov nevykazovali žiadne optimistické skreslenie pre negatívne udalosti. Potvrdili sme korelácie škál nerealistického optimizmu s osobnostnými charakteristikami podľa GPP-I, so slabou tesnosťou vzťahov (r< ,150). V závere práce sú výsledky diskutované s odporúčaním ďalšieho skúmania a možnosťami aplikácie výsledkov.
