The concept of biopower in the work of M. Foucault

Abstract:

This thesis analyses Foucault’s concept of biopower, whilst setting it in his broader concept of power. The aim of this thesis is to describe and explain Foucault’s concept of biopower and compare the paradigmatic notions of power held by Foucault on the one hand and traditional (liberal) authors on the other. The conclusion of this thesis is that Foucault’s concept of power is a relevant contribution to political philosophy, and that liberalism legitimizes the status quo and doesn’t allow grasping the phenomenon of power in its complexity.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá Foucaultovým konceptom biomoci, pričom je tento koncept zasadený do Foucaultovho celkového poňatia moci. Za cieľ si táto práca kladie popísať a vysvetliť tento Foucaultov koncept biomoci a porovnať paradigmatické poňatie moci u Foucaulta a klasických (liberálnych) autorov. Výstupom práce je tvrdenie, že Foucaultov koncept moci je prínosný pre politickú filozofiu, a že liberalizmus legitimizuje status quo a neumožňuje uchopiť fenomén moci v jeho komplexnosti.
