Natural history as the topic of the literature of the 16th century

Abstract:

Pod pojmem historia naturalis rozumíme disciplínu, jež deskriptivním způsobem a systematickým přístupem uchopuje přírodní jevy. Tato práce pojednává o recepci přírody Nového světa ve středoevropském kontextu. Na základě komparativní analýzy vybraných, zejména tištěných pramenů z českého a německého prostředí 16. století jsou hodnoceny a interpretovány tradiční přírodní kategorie (flóra, fauna, minerály a kovy). Cílem práce je osvětlit, jakým způsobem si evropský čtenář 16. století vytvářel obraz o americkém přírodním světě a co konkrétně bylo obsahem takto utvořeného obrazu.

Abstract:

The term historia naturalis stands for a discipline which tries to comprehend natural phenomenons by using descriptive methodology and systematic approach. This thesis discusses the reception of nature of the New World in the context of Central Europe. Traditional natural categories (flora, fauna, minerals and metals) are critically assessed and interpreted through the comparative analysis of the selected, primarily printed sources originating from the Czech and German lands in the 16th century. The principal aim of the thesis is to present the way contemporary Europeans constructed the image of American natural world and what specifically formed the content of said image.
