Second Sophistic as a Unifying Force in the Greco-Roman World

Abstract:

Disertace se věnuje tzv. druhé sofistice, kulturně-literárnímu fenoménu, který měl zásadní vliv na řecko-římskou literární produkci 1.–3. století n. l. Na hnutí je nahlíženo ze širší perspektivy jako na řečnicko-literární směřování typické pro rozkvět epideiktické rétoriky, snahy o očištění jazyka po vzoru klasických řeckých a archaických římských autorů a kompetitivní povahu snah o dosažení elitního vzdělání. Důraz je kladen zejména na vzájemné vztahy mezi jednotlivými sofisty a jejich společensko-kulturní vazby, spíše než tradičně na jednotlivé autory a jejich díla, případně řecké vymezování se vůči římské nadvládě, jak tomu bylo zvykem u dřívějších badatelů. Hlavním cílem práce bylo představit způsoby, jakými druhá sofistika sloužila jako sjednocující faktor v elitním intelektuálním diskurzu napříč etnickým, profesním či žánrovým spektrem.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with deals with the ecumenical nature of the Second Sophistic, a socio-cultural phenomenon roughly dated between 50 and 250 CE that exerted much influence on the literary production of the imperial period. It approaches the movement from a broader perspective, i.e. as a rhetorical salon-like culture characteristic of a raised interest in epideictic oratory, public display, search for language purity, and verbal accurateness, as well as of the agonistic nature of achieving paideia. The focus is put on the mutual relationships between sophists and their sociocultural networks rather than the individual authors and their works. The main objective of the thesis is to present Second Sophistic as an unprecedentedly unifying factor in various aspects of Greco-Roman intellectual discourse and to illustrate in what ways it functioned beyond mere exertion of Greek identity against Roman domination, serving as a platform for negotiating elite status.
