Relationships among attitudes towards death, hope, and mindfulness in Medical Faculties students

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývala postoji ke smrti, nadějí a všímavostí u studentů lékařských fakult, a to konkrétně u studentů oborů Všeobecné lékařství a Všeobecná sestra. Prvním cílem diplomové práce bylo prozkoumat vztahy mezi těmito koncepty. Druhým cílem bylo prozkoumat vztahy mezi postoji ke smrti a vybranými charakteristikami. Nejprve jsme se v teoretické části práce zaměřili na teoretické poznatky týkající se postojů ke smrti, naděje a všímavosti a na výsledky již provedených výzkumů. Náš výzkum probíhal online dotazníkovou formou. Výzkumný soubor se skládal z 330 respondentů (z toho 83 % byly ženy). Průměrný věk respondentů byl 22 let. Nástroji sběru dat byly Revidovaný profil postojů ke smrti (Wong et al., 1994), Škála prožívané naděje (Krafft et al., 2017) a Dotazník pěti aspektů všímavosti – zkrácený (Baer et al., 2012). Zjistili jsme záporný vztah únikového přijetí smrti s nadějí i všímavostí a také kladný vztah mezi vstřícným přijetím smrti a nadějí. Dále jsme odhalili řadu rozdílů v postojích ke smrti na základě vybraných charakteristik, např. z hlediska víry v posmrtný život. Respondenti, kteří si byli nejméně jistí ohledně toho, zda posmrtný život existuje nebo ne, vykazovali nejvyšší míru strachu ze smrti. Náš výzkum byl pravděpodobně první, který se zabýval současně postoji ke smrti, nadějí i všímavostí. Díky tomu přinesl nové poznatky a podněty k dalšímu výzkumu.

Abstract:

The thesis focused on attitudes towards death, hope, and mindfulness in medical faculties students, specifically in students of General Medicine and General Nursing. The first aim of the thesis was to explore the relationships among these concepts. The second aim was to explore the relationships among attitudes towards death and selected characteristics. Firstly, we focused on theoretical knowledge about attitudes towards death, hope and mindfulness and the results of studies already conducted. Our research was conducted online by a questionnaire. The research group included 330 respondents (83 % women). The respondents were on average 22 years old. Data were collected by the Death Attitude Profile – Revised (Wong et al., 1994), the Perceived Hope Scale (Krafft et al., 2017) and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire – Short Form (Baer et al., 2012). Results showed negative relationships between escape acceptance of death and hope, between escape acceptance of death and mindfulness, and positive relationship between approach acceptance of death and hope. We also revealed several differences in attitudes toward death based on selected characteristics, such as belief in the afterlife. Respondents who were least certain about whether the afterlife exists reported the highest level of fear of death. Our research was probably the first research focused on attitudes towards death, hope, and mindfulness at the same time. Thanks to this, it brought new knowledge and inspiration for further research.
