Critique or Harm? Roland Barthes and Guy Debord

Abstract:

Tato práce se pokouší o zprostředkování jednotné platformy u Rolanda Barthese a Guye Deborda, na které bylo možné autory porovnat. Objektem porovnávání jsou kritické metody obou autorů. U Rolanda Barthese se jedná o strukturalistickou analýzu moderních mýtů a ideologií. U Guye Deborda se jedná o kritickou teorii zaměřenou na společnost spektáklu ? na kapitalistickou zfetišizovanou praxi jako součást společenské totality. Obě metody se značně liší zejména ve svém přístupu ke kritice politicko-ekonomických jevů (mýty, ideologie, spektakularita). Rozdíl spočívá v tom, že Roland Barthes svou kritiku zaměřuje na parciální diskurzy (soustavy znaků) a prostřednictvím této kritické metody analyzuje různé formy ekonomických mechanismů odděleně od společenské totality. Debordova kritická metoda však zkoumá všechny fenomény jako neoddělitelně spjaté s celkem společností. Na základě těchto faktů jsem se pokusil vypracovat argumenty, jež k zodpovězení otázky, zdali kritizovat, či také škodit, odkazují k Debordově efektivnímu snoubení teorie s praxi, které dokáže konstruovat nové situace. Argumenty jsem se pokusil problematizovat prostřednictvím Baudrillardovy koncepce simulace, na níž jsem zdůraznil, proč je důležité klást akcent na Debordovo škození (konstrukce situace). Zde se ukázalo, že vzhledem k aktuální situaci radikálního kapitalistického kolonizování životního prostoru, se stále v určitých aspektech jedná o spektakulární společnost a z toho důvodu je nutno otázku škození rehabilitovat.

Abstract:

This work I try to build a unified platform to compare two thinkers: Roland Barthes and Guy Debord. The object of my comparative analysis are critical methods of these thinkers: Barthes? structuralist analysis of modern myths and ideologies and Debord?s critical theory of society focused upon the society of the spectacle, that is a capitalist fetishized praxis as a part of the social totality. The methods significantly differs in their respective approach to the critique of politico-economical phenomena (myth, ideology, spectacularity). While Barthes? critique aims at particular discourses (structures of signs) without taking into account the social totality, Debord?s critical method explores all phenomena as inextricably linked with the social whole. On the basis of these insights I develop arguments to answer the question whether one should only analyze or one should also harm ? these arguments refer to Debord?s effective unity of theory and practice and this unity results into construction of new situations. I problematize these argumens pointing to Baudrillard?s theory of simulation ? I show why one should put emphasis on Debord?s harming, that is constructing of situations. Regarding a contemporary situation of radical capitalist colonization of the living space, it becomes clear we still live, from a certain point of view, in the spectacular society and, thus, it is necessary to rehabilitate the question of harming.
