Assessment of the bioavailability of soil contamination in the eastern part of the Lužice Mountains with As, Cd, Pb, and Zn

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na kontaminaci půd v oblasti Lužických hor do 15 km od Horní Světlé v rámci České republiky. Vybraná oblast je spojená s dlouholetou historií sklářské výroby, především výrobou dekoračního skla, kde se v minulosti používaly rizikové prvky a kontaminace už zde byla zjištěna. Pro práci byly vybrány rizikové prvky As, Cd, Pb a Zn. Nejprve bylo potřeba s pomocí nástrojů GIS vybrat místa, kde dosud nebyly provedeny odběry vzorků a zároveň v okolí již byla zjištěna kontaminace v povrchových vrstvách půdy. Dále bylo potřeba na těchto místech provést oděry hloubkových profilů k rozlišení emisí od možného vlivu geologického podloží. Z analýz půd pomocí rtg fluorescenční spektrometrie byly vytvořeny geochemické mapy s klasifikovanou vrstvou pro jednotlivé rizikové prvky. Pro posouzení biodostupnosti bylo vybráno 12 vzorků s nejvyšší celkovou koncentrací Pb a As v povrchových 20 cm. Následně byla vybrána extrakční činidla, a to roztoky NH4NO3, HNO3, Chelatonu 3 a (NH4)2SO4 dle Wenzela a lučavkou královskou pro posouzení mobility a dostupnosti rizikových prvků. Nejvíce biodostupné je v oblasti Pb, zatímco As, Cd a Zn nepředstavují riziko. Kontaminace Pb a As pochází ze sklářství, místně zvýšený Zn má původ v intermediálních vulkanických horninách.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on soil contamination in the Lusatian Mountains, specifically within a 15 km radius of the village of Horní Světlá in the Czech Republic. The selected area is historically associated with extensive glassmaking activities, particularly the production of decorative glass, where potentially hazardous elements were often used. Previous studies have already identified contamination at this site. The research focused on the assessment of four risk elements: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). The first step was to use GIS tools to identify sites where no soil sampling had previously been conducted, but where contamination of surface soil layers had been detected in the surrounding area. At these sites, deep soil profiles were sampled to differentiate between anthropogenic emissions and the potential influence of the underlying geological substrate. The collected soil samples were then analyzed using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The results were used to create geochemical maps with classified layers representing the spatial distribution of each risk element. To evaluate the bioavailability of the contaminants, twelve samples with the highest total Pb and As concentrations in the top 20 cm of soil were selected for further analysis. Several extraction agents were used to assess the mobility and potential environmental availability of the elements studied, including solutions of NHNO, HNO, EDTA (Chelaton 3), (NH)SO according to the Wenzel method, and aqua regia. The results indicate that lead (Pb) has the highest bioavailability in the study area, while arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) are considered to pose a lower environmental risk. The sources of Pb and As contamination are associated with historical glass production, while locally elevated concentrations of Zn are associated with intermediate volcanic bedrock.
