Assessment of Suicide Risk in the Elderly

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of the suicide risk in the elderly. Mothods: The research survey was carried out through quantitative study method. For data collection was used a standardized tool (The Nurses' Global Assessment of Suicide Risk) ? NGASR (Cutcliffe, Barker 2004). Research encompass 102 seniors, who meet the criteria. The criteria for inclusion in research survey were reaching a particular number of points in Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) (Folstein et al. 1975). The minimum threshold of points were set to 25 which indicates ?normal state?. The survey covered the period from March 2015 to January 2016 in the elderly hospitalized in Geriatric in Ostrava City Hospital. Results: From the whole population of 102 patients, 14 % reached the extreme risk, 21 % reached high risk, 21% reached medium risk and 44% reached low risk of suicide. The ordination analysis revealed that suicide indicators were significantly divided between the males and females. Based on this result it can be generally assumed that the suicide risk among males is associated mainly with the suicide factors indicating social problems, on the other hand females suicide risk was determined mainly by psychological indicators. Conclusion: In this work sociodemographic factors did not affect degree of suicide risk in the elderly over 65 years. From the results it can be assumed that the causes of suicidal risks are different in men and women. Therefore, it would have to be taken into account in the context of the diagnostic processes for determining suicide risk and also in the subsequent preventive arrangements. ABSTRAKT Cieľ: Cieľom práce je zistiť výskyt suicidálneho rizika u seniorov. Metodika: Výskumné šetrenie sa uskutočnilo prostredníctvom kvantitatívnej výskumnej metódy. K zberu dát bol, použitý štandardizovaný nástroj (The Nurses' Global Assessment of Suicide Risk) ? NGASR (Cutcliffe, Barker 2004). Do výskumného šetrenia bolo zahr nutých 102 seniorov, ktorí splňovali dané kritéria. Kritériom pre zaradenie bolo dosiahnutý počet bodov v testu kognitívnych funkcií ? Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) 25 a viac ? hraničný stav (Folstein et al. 1975) Výskumne šetrenie prebiehalo v období od marca 2015 do januára 2016 u seniorov hospitalizovaných na geriatrických oddeleniach. Výsledky: Z celkovej populácie 102 študovaných pacientov dosiahlo 14 % extrémne riziko, 21 % vysoké riziko, 21 % stredné riziko a 44 % nízke riziko samovraždy. Z výsledkov ordinačnej analýzy sme zistili, že jednotlivé indikátory samovraždy sa preukazne rozdelili medzi mužov a ženy. Na základe tohto výsledku je možné obecne usudzovať, že muži mali riziko samovraždy spojené prevažne s faktormi indikujúcimi sociálne problémy, naopak u žien bolo determinované riziko samovraždy prevažne psychickými indikátormi. Záver: V našom výskume sme zistili, že sociodemografické faktory u hospitalizovaných seniorov nad 65 rokov neoplývajú mieru suicidálneho rizika. Z výsledkov sa dá usudzovať, že príčiny suicidálneho rizika sú rôzne u mužov a u žien. Z tohto dôvodu by sa malo prizerať v rámci diagnostického ošetrovateľského procesu a stanovení rizika samovraždy a následne v preventívnych opatreniach.
