The English Past Perfect Tense and Its Czech Equivalents

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o anglickém předminulém čase prostém a anglickém předminulém čase průběhové, o jejich formě, případech užití a o jejich překladu do češtiny. Jedním z cílů této práce je objasnit gramatické kategorie anglických sloves, obzvláště slovesný vid, rod a čas. Zpočátku se tato práce zaměřuje především na popis anglických sloves, jejich gramatických kategorií a jejich klasifikace z několika různých úhlů pohledu. Dále se tato práce zabývá formou a významem anglického předminulého času prostého a anglického předminulého času průběhového. V závěru teoretické části tato práce stručně popisuje překladatelský proces. Druhá část této práce se zabývá analýzou anglických excerptů. Tato analýza je především cílena na získání odpovědí čtyř výzkumných otázek, které souvisejí s překladatelským procesem a popisem českých ekvivalentů anglického předminulého času prostého a průběhového. V poslední části analýzy jsou anglické excerpty, čerpané z knihy Harry Potter a Kámen mudrců od J. K. Rowlingové, porovnány se svými českými ekvivalenty.

Abstract:

This undergraduate thesis deals with the past perfect and past perfect progressive tense, their form, meaning, means of their use and their translation into Czech. The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the grammatical categories of the English verbs, especially the grammatical category of aspect, voice and tense, and the translation process, especially translation of the past perfect and past perfect progressive tense. At the beginning, the theoretical part is mainly concerned with the description of the English verbs, their grammatical categories and their classification from various points of view. Further, the form and meaning of the present perfect, future perfect, past perfect and past perfect continuous are explained. At the end of the theoretical background, a brief introduction into the translation process is provided. In the second part of this theses, the analysis of the English excerpts is described. It mainly deals with the answers to the four research questions which are related with the translation process and description of the Czech equivalents of the past perfect and past perfect progressive. In the final part of the analysis, the English excerpts, extracted from the book of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling, are compared with their Czech equivalents.
