Genre Transformation of the Novel in Late Romanticism

Abstract:

The M. A. thesis deals with the genre transformation of the novel in the historical and theoretical context of late Romanticism. The aim of the thesis is to trace this transformation on the example of two late Romantic novels: "Die Elixiere des Teufels" (1815) by E. T. A. Hoffmann and "Der schwarze Jonas, Kapuziner, Räuber und Mordbrenner" (1805) by Ignaz Ferdinand Arnold. I analyze and compare both texts with regard to the transformation of the novel into a 'trivial' or 'popular' novel (Gothic novel in English terminology) with all its features. Therefore, the novel is presented as a new literary genre; this is shown on its transformation of typical motifs of the so-called Black Romanticism (Schwarze Romantik, as this period is called in German literary history) such as monk, bandit, castle, ruins, secret society, sex, murder, rape and murder, cannibalism, evil, and the devil. I analyze these motives and characters in the individual chapters. Special attention is paid to the concept of trivial literature, its origin and the role of triviality in Black Romanticism. Furthermore, I focus on the question of who the reading public of the 18th century was, and their interests and needs. I explain the concept of so-called small people (die kleinen Leute) and the reasons why readers wanted to have fun, and what their ideas and fantasies were when reading books. Finally, I mention the conditions and consequences of genre transformation in the context of entertaining (popular) literature.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zabývá žánrovou proměnou románu v dějinném a teoretickém kontextu pozdní romantiky. Tuto proměnu se snažím vysledovat na příkladu dvou dobových románů: "Die Elixiere des Teufels" (1815) od E. T. A. Hoffmanna a "Der schwarze Jonas, Kapuziner, Räuber und Mordbrenner" (1805) od Ignaze Ferdinanda Arnolda. Obě díla analyzuji a porovnávám s ohledem na proměnu formy románu v triviální román (v anglické terminologii Gothic novel, gotický román) se všemi jeho znaky. Dále je představen román jako nový literární žánr a na funkci a proměnu typických motivů tzv. černé romantiky (Schwarze Romantik) jako mnich, loupežník, zámek, ruiny, tajný spolek, sex, vražda, sex. vražda a kanibalismus, zlo a ďábel. Tyto motivy a postavy jsou analyzovány v jednotlivých kapitolách. V dalších kapitolách je pozornost věnována pojmu triviální literatura, jejímu vzniku a roli triviality černé romantice. To souvisí s otázkou, kdo byla čtenářská obec 18. století, jaké měla zájmy a potřeby. Vysvětluji pojem tzv. malí lidé (die kleinen Leute) a důvody, proč se čtenáři chěli bavit a jaké byly jejich představy a fantazie při četbě knih. Na konci práce jmenuji důvody a důsledky žánrové proměny v kontextu zábavné literatury.
