Relationships among attitudes towards death and mindfulness: correlation study

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zjišťováním vztahu postojů ke smrti a všímavosti. Teoretická část této práce zahrnuje dva tematické celky – smrt a všímavost. V empirické části jsme v první řadě prozkoumali vztahy mezi úrovní všímavosti a jednotlivými postoji ke smrti. Následně jsme zjišťovali, zda na základě sociodemografických charakteristik existují rozdíly v postojích ke smrti. Pro účely našeho výzkumu jsme zvolili následující proměnné: pohlaví, věk, partnerský vztah, náboženství a víra v posmrtný život. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 277 osob, z toho 204 žen a 73 mužů. Sběr dat probíhal online formou prostřednictvím dotazníku. Ve výzkumu jsme využili zkrácenou verzi dotazníku pěti aspektů všímavosti (FFMQ-15) a dotazník zjištující postoje ke smrti (DAP-R). Na základě výsledků můžeme podpořit hypotézu, že mezi všímavostí a postojem vstřícného a neutrálního přijetí smrti existuje pozitivní vztah a mezi zbývajícími postoji ke smrti a všímavostí existuje negativní vztah. Při zjišťování rozdílů v postojích ke smrti v závislosti na sociodemografických charakteristikách jsme nejvýraznější rozdíly nalezli u osob s různými náboženskými postoji v subškále měřící postoj vstřícného přijetí smrti. U ostatních sociodemografických charakteristik se nám taktéž podařilo nalézt statisticky významné rozdíly, ale menší.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to explore the relationship between attitudes towards death and mindfulness. The theoretical part contains two thematic sections – death and mindfulness. In the empirical part, we first explored the relationship between the level of mindfulness and different attitudes towards death. Next, we tried to find out if there are any differences in attitudes towards death based on socio-demographic characteristics. For the purposes of our research, we chose the following variables: sex, age, relationship status, religion and belief in an afterlife. Our sample group consisted of 277 persons – 204 women and 73 men. The data were collected through an online questionnaire. In our research, we used the shortened version of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-15) and the Death Attitude Profile-Revised questionnaire (DAP-R). Based on the results, we can support the hypothesis that there is a positive correlation between mindfulness and an approach or neutral acceptance of death; and that there is a negative correlation between mindfulness and other attitudes. When exploring the differences between attitudes towards death based on socio-demographic characteristics, we found the biggest differences in persons with various religious attitudes in the subscale measuring approach acceptance of death. We also found statistically relevant differences in other socio-demographic characteristics, but they were smaller.
