Prediction of development and investment potential of Bitcoin

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá predikcí vývoje a posouzením investičního potenciálu kryptoměny Bitcoin. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na historický vývoj předmětu z počáteční fáze sběratelského předmětu až po obecně přijímané peníze, na které navazují kryptoměny a Bitcoin, jejichž vznik a vývoj přichází společně s příchodem a širokou adaptací internetu. Jsou osvětleny domněnky o zakládajícím vývojáři vystupujícím pod pseudonymem Satoshi Nakamoto. Zároveň je vysvětleno fungování Bitcoinového protokolu, jeho klíčových inovativních řešení, které pomohly vyřešit problém předcházejících kryptoměn. Zmíněny jsou investiční strategie investování a kritéria hodnocení efektivnosti investice podle investičního trojúhelníku. Vlastní část práce se soustředí na rozbor Bitcoinu ze dvou úhlu pohledu – Bitcoin jako prostředek směn a Bitcoin jako investiční aktivum. V první části vlastní práce je navrženo, jak postupovat pro uskutečnění směny, uchování a manipulování s Bitcoinem. Navrženy jsou postupy a příklady, přičemž se zmiňují fáze vývoje Bitcoinu a jeho vlastnosti jako dobrého uchovatele hodnoty, které se poté komparují s tradičními fiat měnami a jinými formami majetku. V druhé části vlastní práce se posuzuje Bitcoin, jakožto investiční aktivum, podle strategií dlouhodobého investování. Vyhodnoceny jsou jednotlivé strategie z hlediska času, frekventovanosti investování a zhodnocení. Na základě obou částí vlastní práce je dosaženo závěru, jestli Bitcoin vykazuje spíše prostředku směn (peněz) nebo investičního aktiva, přičemž je závěrem, že Bitcoin je původní podstatou digitální měnou, která cílí k naplnění podstaty prostředku směn (peněz), avšak je na půli cesty z tohoto pohledu. Nicméně jako investiční aktivum tuto podstatu naplňuje z hlediska toho, že v něj investoři vkládají důvěru a snaží se tím docílit svých cílů, které si definovali v osobní investiční strategii.

Abstract:

This thesis examines Bitcoin's development and investment potential. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the historical development of the object from its initial phase as a collector's item to a generally accepted money, followed by cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin, whose emergence and development came together with the birth and widespread adoption of the Internet. Speculation about the founding developer going by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto are brought to light. At the same time, it explains how the Bitcoin protocol works and the key innovative features that helped solve the problem of previous cryptocurrencies. Investment strategies and criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of an investment according to the investment triangle are briefly mentioned. The main part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of Bitcoin from two perspectives – Bitcoin as a medium of exchange and Bitcoin as an investment asset. The first part of the main part proposes the steps to be taken to exchange, hold and manipulate Bitcoin. The proposed procedures and examples are given, noting the stages of Bitcoin's development and its attributes as a good preserver of value, which are then compared with traditional fiat currencies and other forms of assets. In the second part of the main part, Bitcoin, as an investment asset, is evaluated according to long-term investment strategies. Each strategy is evaluated in terms of time, frequency of investment and appreciation. Based on both parts of the main part, it is concluded whether Bitcoin displays more the characteristics of a medium of exchange (money) or an investment asset, concluding that Bitcoin is at its core a digital currency that aims to fulfil the essence of a medium of exchange (money), but is only halfway there. As an investment asset, it fulfils this essence in terms of investors placing their trust in it and thereby seeking to achieve their goals as defined in their investment objectives.
