Influence of Dunning-Kruger Effect on the Perception of Intelligence

Abstract:

Práce empiricky ověřuje, zda se zkreslené hodnocení vlastních kompetencí a kompetencí druhých zvané Dunning Krugerův efekt projeví také v kontextu interpersonální a intrapersonální percepce inteligence. Na souboru 38 respondentů bylo testováno, nakolik se lidé podle vlastní naměřené inteligence liší v odhadu své úrovně inteligence a úrovně inteligence ostatních. Z šesti stanovených hypotéz se podařilo potvrdit pouze jednu – lidé s vyšší mírou obecných duševních schopností mají tendenci svou úroveň podceňovat. Nedostatek studie tvořil především nízký počet respondentů s nízkou variabilitou naměřených skórů, což bránilo v možnosti, aby se Dunning Kruger projevil. K určení skórů IQ byl použit test struktury inteligence I-S-T 2000 R. K možnosti odhadnout inteligenci druhých sloužila skupinová aktivita, která stála na skupinové dedukci. Rozptyl skórů IQ byl 106-145, všichni účastníci své iq odhadovali podobně, okolo 120. Mezi odhady inteligence ostatních nebyl mezi kvartily signifikantní rozdíl. Lidé ze spodního kvartilu měli tendenci se nadhodnocovat, rozdíl však nebyl statisticky signifikantní

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to empirically examine whether the mistake of the self-evaluation making and evaluation making of others called the Dunning-Kruger effect would appear in the context of interpersonal and intrapersonal perception of intelligence. 38 participants were tested whether they would overestimate or underestimate the level of their own intelligence and the intelligence of others according to their own measured level of intelligence. From six hypothesis one was statistically proven. The people who score in higher level of intelligence tend to underestimate their level of intelligence. The main imperfection of this study was the small number of participants and the low variability of IQ. The intelligence structure test I-S-T 2000 R was used to measure the general cognitive ability of the participants, a group technique was uses to let participants estimate intelligence of others. The variance of scores was 106 to 145 IQ, the mean estimate was around 120 in every quartile.
