Theosophy and occultism in the fantastic short stories by Rubén Darío

Abstract:

The nicaraguan Rubén Darío (1867-1916) is known primarily as a poet and one of the most important leaders of Hispano-American modernism. One of the less researched areas of his work are just his fantastic short stories and its relations with theosophy and the occult sciences. The aim of this work is to find and explore elements of these doctrines in his fantastic short stories and assess to which extent they participate in forming the ultimate meaning of these stories. The thesis contains some theoretical chapters. The second chapter introduces the features of fantastic stories, as they were defined by Tzvetan Todorov, Ana María Barrenechea, Irène Bessière and Rosalba Campra. Further, there is outlined the evolution of the fantastic genre in Hispanic America and there are mentioned key authors and their works. The third chapter explains what is meant by theosophy and occultism. This chapter is based mainly on the work of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, The Key to Theosophy (1889), Practical Occultism (1888) and her articles published under the name of The New Cycle (2009). The following chapter is devoted to periodization of Darío´s short stories by literary critic J. M. Martínez, the main sources of inspiration of his short stories and the origin of his interest in theosophy and occultism. The fifth chapter analyses the elements of these doctrines in fantastic short stories by Rubén Darío.

Abstract:

Nikaragujec Rubén Darío (1867-1916) je známý především jako básník a jeden z nejdůležitějších představitelů hispanoamerického modernismu. Jednou z méně zkoumaných oblastí jeho díla jsou právě jeho fantastické povídky a jeho vztahy s teosofií a okultními vědami. Cílem této práce je najít a prozkoumat prvky těchto učení v jeho fantastických povídkách a posoudit, do jaké míry se podílejí na utváření konečného významu povídek. Diplomová práce obsahuje několik teoretických kapitol. Druhá kapitola představuje charakteristické rysy fantastické povídky, jak je vymezili Tzvetan Todorov, Ana María Barrenechea, Irène Bessière y Rosalba Campra. Dále je nastíněn vývoj fantastického žánru v Hispanoamerice a jsou zmíněni klíčoví autoři a díla. Ve třetí kapitole je vysvětleno, co všechno se skrývá pod pojmy teosofie a okultismus. Tato kapitola se opírá především o díla od Heleny Petrovny Blavatské, Klíč k teosofii (1889), Praktický okultismus (1888) a o její články publikované pod názvem Nový cyklus (2009). Následující kapitola je věnována periodizaci povídek od Daría podle literárního kritika J. M. Martíneze, hlavním inspiračním zdrojům jeho povídek a zrodu jeho zájmu o teosofii a okultismus. V páté kapitole jsou rozebrány prvky těchto učení ve fantastických povídkách Rubéna Daría.
