Status structure within a consumption subculture

Abstract:

Předmětem předložené práce je fenomén motorkářství a motocyklových klubů. V reakci na debatu o proměnách paradigmat subkulturních studií i povahy předmětu jejich výzkumu se předložená práce nejprve snaží vyrovnat s otázkou, zda je možné tuto realitu popsat jako subkulturu. Sledovaný fenomén je následně do rozsáhlé výzkumné tradice studia subkultur zasazen prostřednictvím konceptu subkultury spotřeby. S využitím teorie Pierra Bourdieuho a Sarah Thornton se práce snaží přispět k probíhající debatě o formování statusových diferencí uvnitř subkultur spotřeby a prostředcích zisku postavení na statusové hierarchii uvnitř subkultury. Východiskem této práce je chápání subkultury spotřeby jako specifického a významného pole, v němž cirkulují různé formy kapitálu, určující jeho strukturu. Cílem empirického výzkumu bylo zjistit, jaké druhy kapitálu jsou pro dotyčné pole rozhodující a jaké strategie akumulace kapitálu jsou aktéry využívány. Dospívám k závěru, že všechny prostředky zisku subkulturního statusu představují součást širšího komplexu akumulovaného subkulturního kapitálu, jehož struktura určuje pozici aktéra na horizontální ose a objem na ose vertikálního členění subkulturního pole.

Abstract:

The subject of the submitted thesis is a phenomenon of motorcycling and motorcycle clubs. In response to a debate about the changing of paradigms in subcultural studies and the nature of the object of their research; the presented work is at first trying to deal with the issue whether it is possible to describe the researched phenomenon as a subculture. The observed phenomenon is consequently setthrough the concept of subculture of consumption into an extensive research tradition of the study of subcultures. Using the theory of Pierre Bourdieu and Sarah Thornton, the work seeks to contribute to the ongoing debate about the formation of status differences within the subcultures of consumption and the means of gaining a position on a status hierarchy within the subculture. The starting point of this work is the understanding of the subculture of consumption as a specific and significant field in which circulate various forms of capital, determining its structure. The empirical research was to determine which types of capital are crucial for the field in the issue; and which strategies of accumulation of the capital are being used by actors. I conclude that all the means of gaining a subcultural status are part of a wider complex of accumulated subcultural capital whose structure determines the position of the actor on the horizontal axis and volume on the axis of the vertical division of the subculture field.
