Ecotoxicological evaluation of river sediments in selected localities of the Odra river basin

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou znečištění říčních (dnových) sedimentů v oblasti povodí řeky Odry, jež se nachází na jednom z nejvíce antropogenně znečištěném území České republiky. Teoretická část práce se věnuje popisu vzniku sedimentu a charakteristice jeho struktury. Zmíněny jsou také fyzikálně-chemické vlastnosti sedimentů způsobující sorpci toxických látek, které zapříčiňují jejich následnou kontaminaci. Práce dále pojednává o současném stavu znečištění sedimentů v povodí řeky Odry, včetně popisu systému monitoringu jakosti sedimentu a charakterizuje metody detekce toxických látek. V neposlední řadě teoretická část práce představuje ekotoxikologické testy zakotvené v legislativě ČR, jež jsou aplikovatelné na hodnocení enviromentálních rizik sedimentů. Experimentální část práce popisuje kritéria výběru lokalit pro odběr vzorků sedimentů, metodiku odběru a následnou úpravu vzorků pro testování na baterii pěti ekotoxikologických testů využívajících organismy různých trofických úrovní. Tato část práce dále představuje metodiky provedení jednotlivých testů na standardních látkách a reálných vzorcích odebraného sedimentu, včetně interpretace naměřených hodnot.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the issue of pollution of river (bottom) sediments in the Odra river basin area, which is situated in one of the most anthropogenically polluted area of the Czech Republic. Theoretical part deals with description of sediment formation and characteristic of its structure. The physico-chemical properties of sediments causing the sorption of toxic substances, which cause their subsequent contamination, are also mentioned. The work further discusses the current state of sediment pollution in the Odra river basin, including a description of the sediment quality monitoring system. It also characterizes the methods of detection of toxic substances. Last but not least, the theoretical part of the work presents ecotoxicological tests enshrined in the Czech legislation, which are applicable to the evaluation of environmental risks concerning sediments. The experimental part of the work describes the criteria for the selection of sites for sediment sampling, sampling methodology and subsequent modification of samples for battery testing of five ecotoxicological tests using organisms of different trophic levels. This part of the work also presents the methodologies of performing individual tests on standard substances and real samples of collected sediment, including the interpretation of measured values.
