Change blindness and its relation to working memory capacity

Abstract:

Prezentovaná diplomová práca je zameraná na vzťah medzi change blindness, fenomén definovaný ako neschopnosť detekovať markantné zmeny vo vizuálnom poli, a pracovnou pamäťou (jej kapacitou). V tejto štúdii sme použili tri rôzne metódy indukovania change blindness. Sledovaním korelácie medzi výkonnmi v jednotlivých metódach a kapacitou pracovnej pamäti meranou metódou OSPAN, sme našli vzťah medzi kapacitou pracovnej pamäti a výkonom v metóde "skrytej" (covert task), v ktorej prezentovaná zmena reprezentuje distraktor. Týmto štúdia empiricky podporuje fakt, že individuálne rozdiely v pracovnej pamäti sú reflektované predovšetkým v situáciach interferencie. My predpokladáme, že pracovná pamäť v úlohách detekovania zmien zohráva rolu ignorovania irrelevantných stimulov, a zameriavania sa na relevantné stimuly (informácie).

Abstract:

The presented diploma thesis is focused of the relation between change blindness, phenomenon defined as a failure to detect robust changes in perceptual field, and working memory capacity. In the study, three different methods of change blindness induction were used. Examining the correlation between performances in each of them and working memory capacity, we found relationship between working memory capacity and change detection task where a change plays a role of a distractor. Therefore, the study provides empirical support that individual differences in working memory can be mostly reflected in the situations of interference. We infer that working memory in regard to change detection plays a role of disregarding irrelevant, and focusing on the relevant information.
