Ideology and power in Huxley's and Orwell's dystopias

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl vysvětlit a analyzovat vliv totalitní ideologie na formování moci ve společnosti a potlačení individuality v dystopiích 1984 George Orwella a Konec civilizace Aldouse Huxleyho. Východiskem bude rozbor pojmů totalitní ideologie a moci v dílech Hanny Arendtové, Karla Mannheima a Ericha Fromma. Dále se zaměřím na pochopení vlivu moci na chování občanů v pojetí Orwella a Huxleyho s ohledem na společensko-historické pozadí doby, v níž žili autoři. Následovat bude výklad ideologii Angsoc a Fordismus a různých způsobů manipulace společnosti (propaganda, kolektivní štěstí, ztráta individuální identity) v románech 1984 a Konec civilizace. Na to navazuje analýza lidského chování v totalitní společnosti, vnitřní nesvobody člověka a (ne)možnosti opozice vůči vládě.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis aims to explain and analyze the influence of totalitarian ideology on the formation of power in society and the suppression of individuality in the dystopias 1984 by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. The starting point will be the analysis of the concepts of totalitarian ideology and power in the works of Hannah Arendt, Karl Mannheim, and Erich Fromm. Furthermore, this work is focused on understanding the influence of power on the behavior of citizens in Orwell's and Huxley's concepts, taking into account the socio-historical background of the time in which the authors lived. The following part of the thesis presents an interpretation of the ideology of Angsoc and Fordism and various ways of manipulating society (propaganda, collective happiness, loss of individual identity) in the novels 1984 and Brave New World. The last chapter deals with an analysis of human behavior in a totalitarian society, the inner unfreedom of man, and the (im)possibility of opposition to the government.
