The Sentence Position of the Conditional Auxiliary in Old Czech

Abstract:

Tato práce je věnována formálním a syntaktickým vlastnostem kondicionálového auxiliáru (tzn. tvarům bych, by, bychom apod.) ve staré češtině. Tyto specifické formy slovesa být jsou od původu tvary praslovanského aoristu sigmatického. V kombinaci s l-ovým participiem plnily tyto tvary také funkci plusquamperfekta (či antepréterita), ze kterého se později patrně vyvinul český kondicionál. V souvislosti s touto významovou a funkční přeměnou nabyly uvedené tvary v češtině statutu stálých enklitik. Staročeské období je etapou, ve které se sledované formy mohly vyskytovat ještě ve všech třech uvedených funkcích, ale úloha kondicionálového auxiliáru již pravděpodobně silně dominovala. Cílem práce je dosáhnout co nejpřesnějších závěrů o podobě, funkcích a slovosledu (resp. prozodickém statutu) sledovaných tvarů v této vývojové fázi češtiny. Součástí práce je stručná charakteristika vybraných památek, teoretická část shrnující obecné poznatky o klitických tvarech a analýza konkrétního materiálu. Výsledky analýzy přinášejí nové poznatky o formálních i slovosledných vlastnostech sledovaných tvarů ve staré češtině a relativizaci některých dřívějších teorií.

Abstract:

This thesis pursues the formal and syntactic properties of the conditional auxiliary (i. e. the forms bych, by, bychom etc.) in Old Czech. These specific forms of the verb to be (být) are descended from the form of the Proto-Slavic sigmatic aorist. In combination with the l-participle, these forms also functioned as a pluperfect which probably was the origin of the Czech conditional. In relation to this semantic and functional metamorphosis, the aforementioned forms gained the status of stable enclitics. Old Czech period is an era in which the observed forms could still occur in all three cited functions, but the role of the conditional auxiliary probably already stood in a dominant position. The aim of the thesis is to come to the most accurate conclusions possible about the form, the function and the word order (or the prosodic status) of the observed forms at this stage in the development of the Czech language. The thesis contains a brief characterization of the selected literature, a theoretical part which summarizes general facts about clitic forms and the analysis of the specific sources. The outcomes of the analysis relativize some of the older theories by presenting new facts about the formal properties and the properties of the word order of the observed forms.
