Tolkien as the Theoretician of Fairytales

Anotácia:

Diplomová práce „J. R. R. Tolkien jako teoretik pohádky“ se zabývá výkladem teorie pohádky dle J. R. R. Tolkiena. Tato teorie také velmi úzce souvisí s Tolkienovou celoživotní literární tvorbou. Práce ponejvíce vychází z Tolkienova eseje „O pohádkách“ („On Fairy Stories“, 1938), ve kterém nacházíme nejucelenější obraz této teorie. Tolkien usiluje o správné vymezení pojmu „pohádka“. Snaží se zjistit, jaké jsou funkce pohádky, vypátrat jejich původ, a také zamyslet se nad okruhem recipientů, jimž má být pohádka určena. Práce je kromě výkladu Tolkienovy teorie zaměřena také na uvedení této teorie do kontextu s jeho vlastními díly (Pán Prstenů, Hobit, Silmarillion a další) a životem. Teorie pohádek může být chápána také jako obhajoba začlenění Tolkienových příběhů do kategorie pohádek.

Abstract:

B.A. thesis Tolkien as the Theoretician of Fairytales is dealing with the Tolkien’s interpretation of fairytales. This theory is also closely linked with Tolkien’s lifelong literary work. The question of the definition of fairytales is mostly dealt with in his essay On Fairy Stories (1938), in which the most complete interpre-tation of this theory can be found. Tolkien is also trying to create correct definition of the term fairytales. He is also searching for functions of fairytales, detecting their origin and thinking about the recipient to whom are the fairytales addressed. The thesis also deals with the connection of this theory to Tolkien’s own stories and his life. The theory can be partially understood as a defense of categorization of Tolkien’s stories as fairytales.
