The Impact of the Saudi-led Coalition Blockade on the Situation in Yemen

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá námořní a vzdušnou blokádou, která byla uvalena Saúdskou Arábií na Jemen v březnu 2015. Cílem této práce je posoudit legalitu této blokády a analyzovat dopady blokády na situaci v Jemenu. Časové vymezení práce je do konce roku 2017. Teoretická část se zabývá právní regulací blokády a jejími druhy, a kromě blokády také zbrojním embargem. Následuje kapitola věnovaná vnitrostátnímu kontextu Jemenu, jeho stručné historii a politickému a ekonomickému fungování státu. Kromě toho je také nutný pohled na Jemen v rámci blízkovýchodního regionu, aby bylo možné pochopit, z jakých důvodů se Saúdská Arábie v Jemenu do konfliktu zapojuje. Poslední kapitola posuzuje legalitu blokády a její ekonomické, politické a humanitární dopady na situaci v Jemenu. Blokádu není možné posuzovat jako válečnou blokádu, spíše se jedná o kontrolu dovozu zboží do země. Nejzásadnějším důsledkem blokády je vážná humanitární krize, kterou trpí většina jemenského obyvatelstva.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the maritime and air blockade imposed by Saudi-led coalition on Yemen since March 2015. The aim of this thesis is to assess the legality of this Saudi-led blockade, whether it is a belligerent blockade under the international law or not. The second objective is to analyse the effects of this blockade on the situation in Yemen. The first part of the thesis deals with the regulation of blockade, the types of blockade and the arms embargo. The following chapter is devoted to the historical, political and economic context of Yemen. To understand why the Saudi Arabia intervenes in Yemen, it is necessary to include a chapter about Yemen and its relations within the Middle-East. The last chapter deals with the question of the legality of the blockade and the impacts of the blockade on the situation in Yemen. The blockade cannot be regarded as a belligerent blockade but rather as control of the access to the country. The most important impact is that the blockade aggravated the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
