The Conductor from the Perspective of Orchestral Players

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je popsat představy orchestrálních hráčů o charakteristikách dirigenta, o komunikaci mezi hráči a dirigentem apod. Zvolenou metodou je dotazník, který sbírá odpovědi od 230 profesionálních hráčů z České republiky. Zpracování tohoto dotazníku tvoří klíčovou část práce.Součástí práce je také srovnání tohoto výzkumu s mým předešlým, který byl na obdobné téma, akorát mezi dirigenty. Teoretickým základem práce jsou pak různé učebnice dirigování a zahraniční publikace a články, které se tématikou práce s lidmi v orchestru zabývají. Ve třetí kapitole zodpovídám otázku, zda se dají tyto schopnosti zdokonalovat a případně jak.Dirigentovu úlohu můžeme rozdělit do tří hlavních pilířů: znalost hudby, sdělnost gesta a práce s lidmi (schopnost vést). Třetí pilíř – schopnost pracovat s kolektivem, umět přesvědčit a přirozeným způsobem inspirovat, bývá často podceňovaná, přesto je však v dirigentském povolání zcela zásadní. To, že dirigent musí umět dirigovat, nebo řekněme taktovat (což už je dnes skoro hanlivé označení), je naprosto bez debat. Jakou by ale měl být osobností? Jaká všechna kritéria by měl v očích hráčů splňovat? Jaké předsudky dirigenty provázejí? Jaká by měla být při zkoušení atmosféra? Tyto a mnohé další otázky jsou součástí mého průzkumu, který dává hráčům prostor otevřeně se k dirigentům vyjádřit. V této práci se tedy soustředím na komunikaci mezi dirigentem a hráči a pokouším se zjistit, co kdo od koho očekává, aby bylo možné dosáhnout lepšího porozumění, větší spokojenosti na obou stranách a tím pádem i lepšího výsledku.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe the conductor’s characteristics, communication between orchestral players and the conductor, etc. from the players’ perspective. The research method used was a questionnaire filled out by 230 professional players from the Czech Republic. The evaluation of the questionnaire presents the key part of this thesis.In the thesis, I also compare this research to my previous study on the same topic which was carried out among conductors. The theoretical part is based on conducting textbooks as well as foreign publications and articles covering the topic of working with people within an orchestra. In the third chapter of the thesis, I tackle the question: can these conducting skills be improved, and if so, how?The conductor’s role can be divided into three main categories: their knowledge of music, gestures, and working with people (their ability to lead). This third category, the ability to work with a group of people, to convince and inspire in a natural way, is crucial for the profession, yet it is often underestimated. The fact that a conductor has to know how to conduct, or set the tempo, is without a question. However, what should the conductor be like in terms of character? What criteria should they fulfil in the eyes of the players? What prejudices are connected to conductors? What atmosphere should be created at rehearsals? These, and many other questions, appear in my survey through which the players could openly express their opinions. Therefore, in this thesis, I focus on the communication between the conductor and players with the aim of finding mutual expectations in order to achieve a better understanding and greater satisfaction on both sides, thus a better overall result.
