Mediating Scottish Gaelic Elements in Czech Literary Translation

Abstract:

The master thesis focuses on Scottish Gaelic (SG) elements that are mediated to Czech literary translation. The corpus consists of a) 59 tales selected from three books, Czech translations, that were published as compact collections (not isolated stories) of tales, myths, stories, fairy-tales, folktales or legends; and b) their English and/or Scottish Gaelic originals. The aim is to observe and analyse the mediation of Scottish Gaelic elements to the selected Czech literary translations, namely a) the applied methods, b) what needs to be considered before the mediation, c) how much of the original culture is transferred and/or preserved, d) the specifics of mediation from Scottish Gaelic through English and to Czech. The elements are: a) the word 'fairy' and its Gaelic equivalent s?th in all its forms (fae, the little people etc.); and b) Scottish Gaelic propria (toponyms, hydronyms, and abionyms) and phrases or words that are culturally specific, such as supernatural creatures, food, clothes, arts, music, religion, traditions, colours, and so on. The methodology consists of Ch. Nord's functional approach and M. Baker's methods drawing on social semiotics and linguistic theory. In addition, I have selected the publications which are particularly devoted to mediation of propria, namely the strategies defined by Ž. Dvořáková and E. E. Davies, and combined them. The results show that preservation (borrowing) is the dominant method in the Czech literary translation, however, it may not necessarily correlate with sufficient understanding of SG if not combined with other explanatory strategies.

Abstract:

Magisterská práce se zaměřuje na převod kulturně specifických prvků skotské gaelské kultury v překladu do češtiny. Korpus sestává z pohádek, příběhů, legend apod. Celkem ho tvoří 59 českých překladů, které se nacházejí ve třech ucelených sbírkách, a též originály psané anglicky a někdy ve skotské gaelštině. Cílem je zanalyzovat a vysledovat, jakými metodami jsou prvky převedeny; co musí překladatel zvážit před samotným procesem; nakolik je kultura zachována; a jaká jsou specifika překladu ze skotské gaelštiny do angličtiny a následně do češtiny. Analýza se zaměřuje na slovo "fairy" a její gaelský ekvivalent s?th ve všech podobách (fae, the little people apod.), a dále také na propria (toponyma, hydronyma a abionyma) nebo slova či fráze, která jsou kulturně specifická (nadpřirozené bytosti, jídlo, oblečení, umění, hudba, náboženství, tradice, barvy apod.). Výzkum je postaven na kombinacích strategií Ch. Nord a M. Baker, které přistupují k textu z funkčního hlediska, sociální sémiotiky a lingvistické teorie. Zároveň však metodologický aspekt tvoří strategie Ž. Dvořákové a E. E. Davies, které se přímo specializují na vlastní jména. Výsledky výzkumu ukazují, že nejčastěji jsou skotské gaelské prvky v překladu zachovány jako přejímky. Jejich zachování nicméně nemusí znamenat, že jim cílový čtenář porozumí, pokud nejsou použity jiné doplňkové strategie, které by význam osvětlily.
