Perception of national identity and culture in context of immigration

Abstract:

V předkládané práci jsme se zaměřili na prozkoumání vnímané národní identity, a kultury muslimských imigrantek, žijících v České republice, jimi vyznávaných hodnot a preferovaných kritérií kvality života. Dále jsme se zaměřili na soulad mezi aktuální a ideální národní identitou a pokusili jsme se popsat vztahy mezi zkoumanými jevy. Pro naplnění výzkumných cílů jsme zvolili kvalitativní výzkumný design, konkrétně explorativní typ výzkumné studie s prvky Zakotvené teorie, realizovaný prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a administrace dotazníků (SQUALA a Rokeachův test hierarchie hodnot), s vybranými zkoumanými osobami (muslimské imigrantky, žijící v České republice minimálně 1 rok, N=14). Nejvýznamnějšími metodami zpracování dat bylo otevřené a axiální kódování a frekvenční analýza. Výsledky můžeme shrnout následovně: Respondentky neuvedly původní národní identitu, aktuálně se identifikují jako muslimky (n=7), nebo jako Češky (n=3). Ideální identitu vnímají jako českou (n=6), muslimskou (n=5) a muslimsko-českou (n=1). Zjištěný soulad aktuální a ideální identity je častější u osob s muslimskou identitou (n=4), než českou identitou (n=1). V každodenním životě se rozdíly mezi skupinami respondentek s odlišnou národní identitou projevují v oblastech tradičního pojetí rodiny, rituálů spojených s vírou, užívání původního jazyka, kontaktu s příslušníky muslimské minority. U respondentek s českou identitou jsme pozorovali odklon od těchto skutečností. Ve způsobu života respondentky s duální muslimsko-českou identitou, jsme zaznamenali prvky shodné se skupinami respondentek s muslimskou i českou identitou Specifickým prvkem je výchova dětí k duální identitě. Nejvýznamnějšími hodnotami a kritérii kvality života jsou ty, které souvisí s rodinou, vnitřní vyrovnaností a mezilidským kontaktem, silný je osobní význam víry, udávající etické zásady. Respondentky s českou identitou preferují ty, spojené s vnitřní vyrovnaností, respondentky s muslimskou identitou preferují ty, které jsou spojené s vírou a rodinou. Za nejvýznamnější výsledek výzkumného šetření považujeme zjištěnou variabilitu aktuální a ideální identity výzkumného souboru. Domníváme se, že tomuto jevu je v souvislosti s muslimskými imigranty věnovaná malá pozornost.

Abstract:

In the presented thesis we have focused on an exploration of the perceived national identity and culture of female Muslim immigrants living in the Czech Republic and preferred values and criteria of the life quality. Furthermore we have focused on the accordance between actual and ideal national identity and we have tried to describe relations between the investigated phenomena.In order to fulfil our research goals we have chosen qualitative research design. Specifically an explorative type of research study with elements of the Grounded Theory implemented by the semi-structured interviews and distribution of questionnaires (SQUALA and Rokeach value survey). Both were exercised with the selected studied individuals (female Muslim immigrants living in Czech republic for at least 1 year, N=14). The most significant methods of the data processing, was the open and axial coding and frequency analysis.We can summarize the results followingly:Respondents did not mention their native national identity as they nowadays identify themselves as Muslims (n=7) or Czechs (n=3). They see their ideal identity as Czechs (n=6), Muslims (n=5) and Muslim-Czech (n=1). The discovered accordance between current and ideal identity is more common among individuals with Muslim identity (n=4) than among individuals with Czech identity (n=1).In everyday life, the differences between the groups of respondents with different national identity are displayed in the traditional concept of family, rituals connected with religion; usage of native language and contacts with the members of Muslim minority. Respondents with Czech identity had shown the divergence from these facts. We have found elements identical with the Czech and Muslim identity in a lifestyle of the respondent with the dual identity. The very specific element is the upbringing of the children to a dual identity. The most significant values and criteria of the life quality are those connected with the family, inner harmony and interpersonal contact. The personal value of the faith providing the ethical principles is also a very important personal value. Respondents with the Czech identity prefer those values and criteria that are connected with the inner harmony whilst respondents with the Muslim identity prefer those values connected with the religion and family.We consider that the most significant result of our research is the discovered variability between actual and ideal identity of studied sample. We believe that there is only too little attention given to this fact in context with Muslim immigrants.
