The Neurophysiological Foundations of Religiosity

Abstract:

V této práci jsou představeny čtyři vybrané teorie reprezentující poměrně novou vědní disciplínu s názvem neuroteologie. Je popsána historie neuroteologie, filozofické a metodologické propozice jednotlivých výzkumů a dále jsou reprodukovány a rekonstruovány hlavní body jednotlivých teorií pokoušejících se vysvětlit náboženství. Ty jsou identifikované jako problematické, neboť jejich zastánci bez verifikovatelných důkazů tvrdí, že Bůh existuje (tábor pro-Boha), či neexistuje (tábor proti-Bohu), což je hlavní motivace jejich teorií. Mezi další problémy patří předpoklad vydělitelnosti fenoménu náboženství jako specifické kategorie, předpoklad univerzální struktury náboženství, zkoumání pouze vyšších mystických stavů, metodologické nedostatky a požadavek vědecké angažovanosti. Proto je argumentováno, že tyto teorie nemohou přispět religionistice k lepšímu pochopení náboženství. Poté je ukázána disciplína neuropsychologie náboženství, která sdílí stejné výzkumné metody, ovšem bez výše popsaných problému. Díky neuropsychologii je možné lépe pochopit subjektivní náboženskou zkušenost a ověřit některé koncepty kognitivní vědy. Aby však tato disciplína více přispívala religionistice, bylo by potřeba sjednotit výzkumné metody, multiplikovat jednotlivé výzkumy a komparovat získané výsledky.

Abstract:

This paper is concerning with a relatively new scientific field called neurotheology, which emerged quite recently and is still without any unified scientific methodology. For the purpose of this paper were chosen four exemplary theories. In accordance with a systematological method are described philosophical and methodological propositions of these theories and then reproduced theirs basic arguments. After that are identified several problems – e.g. understanding religion as a phenomenon sui generis, the assumption of universal structure of religions, focusing just on higher mystical states etc. However the main problem is (anti) religious motivations of researches, which led to consideration of God's (non)existence without any relevant data and therefore overstepping the scientific borders. Fortunately also some unbiased works exists in the field of neuropsychology of religions and an example of researches focused on religious recitation is shown. This works solved some problems of neurotheology, but a lot of others remains. It's mainly the exploratory methods, the interpretation of outcomes and the purpose of this discipline. Nonetheless it is argued, that neuropsychology of religions can bring better understanding of subjective religious experiences.
