Specific damages of snail shells as the evidence of predation

Abstract:

Suchozemští plži mohou sloužit jejich predátorům jako vhodný zdroj energie, vody a vápníku. Na základě souhrnných poznatků víme, že mezi nejčastější predátory suchozemských plžů patří brouci, dále dvoukřídlý hmyz, masožraví plži, někteří zástupci obratlovců (např. drobní hlodavci, drozdovití ptáci nebo hadi), sekáči, suchozemské ploštěnky, a další. I přes svou omezenou pohyblivost jsou plži schopni se útokům predátorů bránit, a to především díky přítomnosti schránky a různých přídatných struktur (např. žebírkování, přítomnost zpevněného obústí, vznik lamel a ostnů). Rychlé zatažení do ulity a zvýšená produkce lepivého slizu je v kombinaci s přítomností schránky základní obrannou strategií suchozemských plžů. Jednotliví predátoři si proto museli osvojit různorodé techniky, jak bariéru v podobě pevné schránky překonat. Mezi základní útočné strategie predátorů patří napadení plže přes obústí ulity, anebo její rozlámání. Vzhledem k tomu, že prázdné ulity mohou v přírodě přetrvat dlouhou dobu, můžeme podle typu specifického poškození zanechaného na ulitě predátorem určit, zda a kdo plže ulovil. Na základě zpracování odebraných vzorků hrabanky z 30 lokalit pěti typů stanovišť a následné analýzy poškození ulit byla sledována intenzita a typ predace v závislosti na typu stanoviště. Statisticky významná vyšší míra predace byla zaznamenána na stepních lokalitách. Za nejběžnější predátory plžů sledovaných lokalit lze považovat brouky. Dále byla hodnocena intenzita a typ predace v závislosti na velikosti populace a na vývojovém stádiu žitovky obilné (Granaria frumentum) z 15 stepních lokalit. Střevlíci lovili především juvenilní jedince oproti dospělcům, pro které je charakteristická přítomnost zpevněného obústí ulity. Naopak vláhomilka Pherbellia limbata a brouci rodu Drilus preferovali dospělce. Pro střevlíky bylo dokázáno, že intenzita jejich predace lineárně roste s velikostí populace kořisti. Naopak u parazitoida P. limbata nebyl vztah z velikostí populace kořisti zjištěn žádný.

Abstract:

Terrestrial gastropods can serve to their predators as a suitable source of energy, water and calcium. Based on the literature, we know that the most common predators of terrestrial gastropods are beetles, followed by Diptera, carnivorous snails, some vertebrates (e.g. small rodents, thrushes, and snakes), harvestmen, terrestrial flatworms and others. Despite of a limited mobility, snails are able to defend themselves against predator attacks, mainly due to the presence of shell and various shell structures (e.g. ribbing, presence of reinforced aperture lip, creation of lamellas and spines). Snails withdraw themselves very quickly into the shell and begin to produce a quantity of sticky mucus, which is in a combined with the presence of the shell their basic defensive strategy. Therefore, various predators have had to adopt a variety of techniques to overcome the barrier in form of shell. Main attack strategies include attacking snails through the aperture of shell or breaking the shell apart. Because of the persistence of shells in environment for a long time, we can determine, depending on the type of specific damage left by the predator, whether and who has killed the prey. Based on the processing of collected specimens from 30 sites of five different types of habitats, the intensity and type of predation were observed in relation to the habitat type. A statistically significantly higher rate of predation was observed at steppes. Beetles were found as the most common predators of terrestrial snails of all observed sites. Subsequently, the intensity and type of predation were also evaluated in relation to the population size and development stage of Granaria frumentum from 15 steppe sites. The carabid beetles consumed mostly juveniles compared to adults, which are characterized by the presence of reinforced aperture lip of the shell. On the contrary, sciomyzid fly Pherbellia limbata and Drilus beetles preferred the adults. It was proved that the intensity of predation by carabid beetles increases linearly with the population size of its prey, while no pattern was found for the parazitoid fly P. limbata.
