Abstract:

V posledních letech se stala spotřeba vody, jak v domácnostech, tak i na pracovištích, kritickým problémem diskutovaným výzkumníky. Příčinou jsou obtíže se zajištění dostupnosti vody téměř ve všech částech světa. V tomto kontextu se tato práce snaží prozkoumat vhodné způsoby, jak si poradit s nedostatkem vody v Madině - předměstí Accry.Ve studii byla použita kombinovaná metoda sběru dat pro účely diskuze. Primární data byla získána rozhovory a z dotazníků zaslaných patnácti domácnostem v Point Five a St. Peters, které se nachází v Madina District. Pro výběr domácností k dotazování byla použita metoda stratifikovaného výběru. Sesbíraná data byla zakódována a vložena do SPSS k vygenerování frekvence výskytu odpovědí zobrazených v tabulkách a číslech.Studie objevila zajímavé nálezy. Ukázalo se, že většina obyvatel Madiny není formálně zaměstnána. Především obchodníci, kuchaři a barmani, kteří využívají ke své práci i v domácnosti mnoho vody. Z tohoto důvodu mají neustálou potřebu vodu hromadit a vytváří zátěž na její dostupnost. Neposledně, hlavním zdrojem byla pro komunitu voda vedena potrubím (42%), tudíž uzavření přívodu znamenalo vážné překážky pro místní obyvatele a pracující.Srovnávací výzkum ukázal, že ceny za vodu v St. Peters jsou vyšší než v Point Five. Příčiny tohoto nedostatku vody zahrnovaly, mimo jiné, důvody jako špatné územní plánování (39%) a úniky z podzemního potrubí (23%). Následky nedostatku vody jsou obdobně pozorovatelné,například jsou zde problémy s prováděním běžných domácích prací (22%). Ve snaze zmírnit obtíže s tímto spojené, tato studie doporučuje řešení v podobě vrtů, rozšíření nových rozvodných potrubí v oblasti stejně jako vzdělávání obyvatelstva jak efektivně hospodařit s dostupnou vodou.

Abstract:

In recent times the need to manage usage of water both at the household level and at work has become a critical issue discussed by researchers. This follows from the challenge of water access in almost every part of the world. Against this backdrop, this thesis sought to examine suitable ways of coping with water shortages in Madina, a suburb of Accra. The study used mixed methods of data collection in order to gather data for the various discussions. The primary data thus data gathered using questionnaire and interview guide were administered to 15 households each at Point Five and St. Peters which are all located within the Madina District. A stratified sampling technique was used in selecting the household surveyed. The data gathered were coded and inputted into the SPSS to generate frequencies of occurrence of responses presented using tables and figures. The study made some interesting findings. It was revealed that majority of residents in Madina are employed in the informal, specifically traders, cooks and bar operators who use a lot of water in their businesses and home. For this reason, there is always the need to harbour water for use, putting stress on water availability. Also, a major source of water for the community was pipe-borne water (42%) hence closure of the taps meant serious challenges for the residents and workers. A comparative finding, however, was that prices offered by water tenders at St. Peters were high than Point 5 and its environs. Causes of the water shortage included poor layout (39%), leakages in underground laid pipe (23%) among others. The effects of this shortages are therefore equally obvious, for instance, there is difficulty in performing household chores (22%). In other to mitigate these challenges the study recommended the need to provide boreholes, relay the taps in the area, as well as educating residents on the need to make efficient use of the water available to them.
