George Gerbner: Old Age in the Cultivation Theory

Abstract:

V bakalářské práci s názvem George Gerbner: stáří optikou kultivační teorie představujeme Gerbnerovu koncepci a výzkum stáří v kontextu kultivační teorie. Problematikou stáří na televizních obrazovkách se Gerbner začal zabývat roku 1977 v rámci výzkumného projektu Kulturní indikátory. Obsahové analýzy televizních obrazů stáří, stárnutí a seniorů ukázaly především nízké zastoupení a ne příliš pozitivní zobrazování starých lidí v televizním světě. Kultivační analýza pak ukázala, že chápání sociální reality se u silnějších diváků přibližuje realitě televizního světa více, než u diváků slabších. Zjištěné vztahy však byly velmi slabé a nezískaly si velkou pozornost. Přesto však výzkum ukázal, že zobrazování starých lidí na televizních obrazovkách je spojeno s mnoha stereotypy a potažmo tak poukázal na ageismus v americké společnosti. Výzkum stáří pak ilustroval, že v širší rovině Gerbner chápal stáří jako sociálně utvářené. Byl tedy představitelem sociálního konstruktivismu a jeho myšlenky o roli socializace v životě dětí a dospělých byly velmi podobné teorii Bergera a Luckmanna. Významnou roli v procesu utváření reality přitom přisuzoval televizi. Televizní svět dle Gerbnera neodráží realitu, jelikož je řízen vlastními pravidly, především reklamou. Vycházel tak z velké míry z myšlenek Frankfurtské školy a jeho pojetí televizního světa připomíná hyperrealitu Jeana Baudrillarda.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis George Gerbner: Old Age in Cultivation Theory presents Gerbner's concept and research of old age and aging in the context of cultivation theory. The research was begun by Gerbner in 1977 as a part of ongoing research project Cultural Indicators. Extensive content analysis showed high under-representation of elderly persons and that elderly are captured more negatively than any other age group. Cultivation analysis then showed that conceptions of social reality of heavy viewers are closer to the conceptions showed in television than are the conceptions of social reality of light viewers. But associations were not strong enough and gained little attention. Nevertheless, Gerbner's research confirmed that depiction of elderly in television is stereotyped, which also showed the amount of ageism that is embedded in American society. Research in the area of old age also illustrated that Gerbner studied old age as a social category, social construct of society. He was a social constructivist and his ideas about the role of socialization in life of children and adults were somewhat similar to theories of Berger and Luckmann. According to Gerbner, television plays an important role in the process of social construction of reality. World of television then doesn't exactly shows reality because it works according different rules, mostly rules of commercials. His conception of media is thus similar to ideas of Frankfurt school and Gerbner's television world also in a sense reminds hyperreality of Baudrillard.
