Abstract:

This thesis investigates the degree of Europeanisation in regional governance, focusing on the Province of Flevoland in the Netherlands. In order to better be able to measure the degree to which a regional government has become Europeanised, a novel framework is introduced which is built on the dimensions of organisational adaptation, downloading, uploading, and crossloading. By looking at the influence of networks upon these dimensions, an extra level of analysis and explanation is added. Using this framework, a case study is conducted based on interviews to determine the degree of Europeanisation of the regional government of Flevoland. The results of this case study are subsequently used to make recommendations for further scientific research and for practical policy adjustments to further help the Province of Flevoland to work effectively in the EU.
