Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se soustředí na analýzu mého výzkumu, který jsem činil ve spolupráci s 88 studenty v České republice a dalšími 29 studenty v Litvě. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit přízvukové preference Anglického jazyka žáků středních škol. Cíl výzkumu se dá definovat následujícími otázkami: 1) Líbí se žákovi tento přízvuk? 2) Rozumí žák tomuto přízvuku? 3) Chtěl by se žák tento přízvuk naučit? 4) Považuje žák tento přízvuk za praktický? 5) Chtěl by žák, aby jeho vyučující používal tento přízvuk? Data pro tento výzkum byla získána dotazníkem kombinovaným s řadou krátkých nahraných výroků. Tyto zvukové materiály se skládaly z deseti mluvčích různého původu a pohlaví a každý z nich používal jiný přízvuk anglického jazyka. Tyto výroky nebyly nahrány specificky pro tento výzkum, ale byly získány na internetu, i protože online obsah může být použit pro výzkumné účely bez písemného souhlasu autora díky tzv. Fair Use Agreement. Výzkum ukázal, že kanadský přízvuk, všeobecný americký přízvuk (GA), jeden ze severo-anglických přízvuků (Regionální RP) a tzv. Refined RP byly těmi nejupřednostňovanějšími, a to v tomto pořadí. Další variace, tedy Estuary English, irská variace, skotská variace, jižanská variance, afro-americké nářečí a australská variace, byly preferovány jenom některými studenty a všeobecně by jejich použití ve školním prostředí vedlo k silnému rozdělení mezi studenty na ty, kteří mají daný typ rádi a na ty, kteří nemají.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the analysis of my research which was conducted on 88 students in the Czech Republic and additional 29 students in Lithuania. The aim of the research was to identify high school students’ accent preferences in English. The aim can be defined via the following research questions: 1) Does the student like the accent? 2) Does the student understand the accent? 3) Would the student like to learn this accent? 4) Does the student consider this accent practical? 5) Would the student like his/her teacher to use this accent? The data were gathered through a questionnaire in combination with a series of short recorded utterances. The audio material included ten speakers of different origins and genders, each using a different variety of the English language. These utterances were not recorded for this research but were taken from the Internet as online content can be used for research purposes without the written consent of the author under the Fair Use Agreement. The research showed that the Canadian accent, General American, a variety of Northern England (Regional Received Pronunciation), and Refined Received Pronunciation were the most preferred, in this order. The other varieties - Estuary English, Irish, Scottish, Southern, African American Vernacular English, and Australian – have been preferred only by some students and their overall use in classrooms would lead to a strong division between those who like the variety and those who dislike it.
