Analysis of weak and failing states in sub-Saharan Africa: a case study of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou slabých a selhávajících států, konkrétně případovou studií Demokratické republiky Kongo. V první části práce je popsána teorie slabé státnosti a její terminologie, způsoby měření slabé státnosti a také Fragile States Index, který se právě měřením slabé státnosti zabývá. Druhá, hlavní část práce, pojednává o Demokratické republice Kongo z pohledu zhrouceného státu. Obsahuje základní informace o státu, stručnou historii a analýzu let 2000, 2007 a 2013. Tato analýza je provedena na základě socio-ekonomických a politicko-vojenských indikátorů Fragile States Index. Analýzou bylo zjištěno, že největším problémem Demokratické republiky Kongo je existence ozbrojených konfliktů na východě země, které výrazně paralyzují chod státu a ztěžují řešení problému.

Abstract:

The thesis presents the concept of weak and failing states, more particularly the case study of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The first part focuses on the description of weak statehood and its terminology, weak statehood measurement and also the Fragile States Index, whose aim is to measure weak statehood. The second, main part of the thesis disserts on the Democratic Republic of the Congo from the viewpoint of a failed state. It contains basic information about the country, brief history and analysis of the years 2000, 2007 and 2013. The analysis is carried out on the basis of socio-economic and politico-military indicators of the Fragile States Index. The analysis discovered that the major problem of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been the existence of armed conflicts in the east of the country, which have significantly paralysed state functioning and complicated solutions of the problem.
