Architecture and ethos: Reflection on the moral function of architecture in the works of John Ruskin and Roger Scruton

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Reflexe morální funkce architektury v díle Johna Ruskina a Rogera Scrutona“ se zabývá identifikačními kritérii morální architektury v dílech zmíněných autorů. První část práce zkoumá morální kritéria architektury v Ruskinově díle Sedm lamp architektury. Druhá část práce se věnuje hledání morálních kritérií ve Scrutonově knize The Aeshetics of Architecture. Ve třetí části se práce pokouší kritéria morální architektury nalezená u obou filozofů vzájemně porovnat. Výsledek tohoto porovnání pak práce krátce aplikuje na architekturu města Brna. Cílem práce je nalezení kritérií morální architektury, pokus o jejich aplikaci, nastínění možností kritiky architektury z morálního hlediska a také přiblížení děl zmíněných autorů.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis "The Reflection of the Moral Function of Architecture in the Works of John Ruskin and Roger Scruton" deals with the identification criteria of moral architecture in the works of mentioned authors. The first part examines the moral criteria in Ruskin's book The Seven Lamps of Architecture. The second part deals with the search for moral criteria in Scruton's book The Aesthetics of Architecture. In the third part, the thesis tries to compare the criteria of moral architecture found by both philosophers. The results of this comparison are then applied shortly to the architecture of the city of Brno. The aim of the thesis is to find the criteria of moral architecture. The thesis also attempts to apply them and to outline the possibilities of critique of architecture from the moral point of view. Another aim of the thesis is to present the works of the mentioned authors.
