Artificial light in show caves and hibernation of bats

Abstract:

Abstract Light pollution is an unwanted ecological phenomenon, which has been spreaded across the globe in last few years. It is described by increasing of artificial light during the nighttime and it affects both terrestric and aquatic habitat. Light pollution affects caverniculous animals too, especially bats (by artificial lighting inside caves) and can cause negative effects on their hibernating success. In theoretical part of my thesis I summarized knowledge about influence of artificial light on bats during their activities (such as emergency, flight, foraging, etc.) and if it affects them during hibernating season. I found out, that there is no clear opinion about this issue and different researches publish different results about impact of light pollution on hibernants. In practical part I suggested and adjusted methodics of creating light maps in two periodically lightened caves in the Moravian Karst – Císařská Cave and Kateřinská Cave. Distribution of hibernating bats in caves seems to be divided according to species competency. Individuals of species Rhinolophus hipposideros choose also places with higher level of light intensity for their hibernation, in opposite to bat species Myotis myotis and M. emarginatus.

Abstract:

Abstrakt Světelné znečištění je ekologicky nežádoucí jev, který se v posledních letech rozšířil celou planetou. Projevuje se zvýšenou intenzitou umělého světla během noci, a postihuje akvatickou i terestrickou složku prostředí. Světelné znečištění ovlivňuje i jeskynní živočichy, hlavně netopýry (umělým osvětlením jeskynních interiérů) a může mít negativní dopad na jejich hibernační úspěšnost. V rešeršní části práce se zaměřuji na sbírání poznatků o tom, jak umělé osvětlení ovlivňuje netopýry během jejich aktivit (výletová aktivita, let, lov a pod.) a zda na ně má vliv během období hibernace. Zjistil jsem, že neexistuje jednoznačný názor na tuto problematiku a různé výzkumy prezentují odlišné výsledky, co se týká ovlivňování hibernantů světlem. V praktické části jsem navrhl a doladil metodiku tvorby světelných map ve dvou periodicky osvětlovaných jeskyních Moravského krasu – Círařské a Kareřinské jeskyni. Rozdělení hibernujících netopýrů v jeskyních se jeví být druhově specifické. Jedinci druhu Rhinolophus hipposideros si na zimní spánek vybírají i místa s vyšší intenzitou osvětlení, což neplatí u netopýrů druhů Myotis myotis a nebo M. emarginatus.
