Friendship with the People with Intellectual Disability

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá zkušeností přátelství s lidmi s mentálním postižením. Je zaměřena na oblast postojů, podobu konkrétních přátelských vztahů a především na pozitivní zisk z nich vnímaný. Teoretická část práce se věnuje postojům společnosti k lidem s mentálním postižením, jejich integraci. Dále pak mezilidským vztahům s jejich specifiky. Nabízí i přehled důležitých mezinárodních programů, které se zaměřují na přátelství mezi lidmi s postižením a bez postižení, a zahraničních výzkumů zabývajících se tématem pozitivního zisku ze vztahů s lidmi s mentálním postižením. Kvalitativní výzkum byl zrealizován pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a získaná data zpracována na základě fenomenologické analýzy. Výzkumu se účastnilo 5 respondentek, které splňovaly základní kritéria výběru, a to dobrovolné (bez nároku na mzdu) a dlouhodobé setkávání s lidmi s mentálním postižením. Výsledky ukázaly, že respondentky často vnímají své přátele s postižením rovnocenně jako všechny své ostatní přátele. Zdůrazňovaly také individualitu jejich osobnosti, kdy dominantní pro ně nebylo jejich postižení, ale specifické vlastnosti konkrétního kamaráda. Z pozitivních přínosů respondentky jmenovaly například vliv na životní hodnoty a priority, prožívání života naplno a využívání všech možností. Dále uváděly, že díky jejich zkušenosti jsou tolerantnější, trpělivější a spontánnější. Zmiňovaly, že jejich zkušenost jim také přinesla určitá nová zjištění týkající se osob s mentálním postižením a jejich životů. Výsledky srovnávám s již provedenými zahraničními výzkumy a teoretickými poznatky v dané oblasti. Nabízím také doporučení pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with experience of friendship with people with intellectual disability. Concretely it is focused on attitudes, specific attributes of this kind of relationship and mainly on field of perceived positive impacts from these relationships. The theoretical part of this paper contains information about attitudes and prejudice toward people with intellectual disability, integration and their interpersonal relationships. Then, there is presented an overview of researches that were carried out in the field of positive impacts and also a summary of the most important international programs, which are focused on friendship between people with intellectual disabilities and their non-disabled peers. The qualitative study was realized through semi-structured interviews and examined by the phenomenological analysis. In total, 5 respondents participated on the investigation and all of them were women who corresponded to basic conditions of voluntary (without salary) and long-term relationships with people with intellectual disability. The results showed that the respondents often perceived their friends with disability on equal footing with those without disability and they emphasized the individuality and specific qualities of the personality of their friends. Among the positive benefits from their friendships were mentioned: impact on values and priorities, sense of purpose of life, increased tolerance, patience and spontaneity. The respondents have also mentioned that their experience has brought them some new findings about people with intellectual disability and their lives. The results of this study were compared to foreign researches and theoretical findings done in the field. Some recommendations for further research are proposed, too.
