Geographical perception of danger and crime in the surrounding of state prison

Abstract:

Empirická studie navazuje na americké výzkumy realizované v komunitách v okolí vězeňských areálů a bere si za cíl ověřit v českých podmínkách obavy pociťované ve vztahu k vězení v americkém prostředí. Obavy pociťované ve vztahu k instituci vězení a k jejímu fungování v sousedství, které byly popsány v USA, tato studie dále rozšiřuje o možné obavy spojené s charakteristikami a specifiky prostoru, který vězeňský areál obklopuje. Tyto obavy byly formulovány v návaznosti na studie environmentální psychologie, v rámci teoretických směrů Space syntax a Teorie rutinních aktivit. Studie tedy usiluje o zachycení většího spektra obav a dále o jejich navázání na možné ovlivňující faktory, kterými byly zvoleny fyzická a psychologická blízkost věznice pro obyvatele sousedství, dále pak důvěra ve své sousedy a pocit poskytované sociální kontroly od nich. Zvažovány byly i další intervenující proměnné (věk, pohlaví, péče o děti a další). Výzkum realizovaný jako dotazníkové šetření na vzorku 207 jedinců dospěl k závěru, že obavy spojené s přítomností areálu věznice v sousedství jsou komunitou prožívané slabě, většina takové obavy nepociťuje. Obavy spojené s provozem věznice silněji pociťovaly ženy, lidé mezi 25 a 50 lety. Nejsilnějšími pociťovanými obavami byly obavy z návštěv vězňů, dále pak obavy z možnosti útěku vězně, které byly spojené s možností, že uprchlý vězeň spáchá trestný čin. Obavy související s charakterem prostoru okolo věznice nejsilněji pociťovali jedinci mezi 15 a 18 lety a muži; výraznou byla obava spojená s pohybem v noci okolo areálu věznice. Obavy byly ve vztahu s oběma hlavními sledovanými nezávislými proměnnými – fyzickou a psychologickou blízkostí věznice. Vzdálenější sousedé, stejně jako ti s větší psychologickou vzdáleností od věznice pociťovaly obavy silněji. Ukázalo se, že významnější než fyzická vzdálenost od věznice je pro prožívání obav vzdálenost psychologická, konkrétně míra znalostí o věznici a její zahrnutí do kognitivní mapy. Nejvýznamnější ze sledovaných proměnných se ale pro prožívané obavy ukázaly pochybnosti o sociální kontrole sousedů. Jedinci, kteří nedůvěřují svým sousedům a pochybují o jejich sociálním dohledu, pociťovali silnější obavy. Výzkum byl realizován jako kvantitativní studie stavící na korelačních vztazích a porovnání jednotlivých skupin, nelze na jeho základech mluvit o jasných vztazích příčin a následků. Poskytuje první vhled do problému v českých podmínkách a nabízí možné souvislosti pociťovaných obav. Odhaluje souvislosti obav s charakteristikami komunity a způsobu komunikace s ní o přítomnosti věznice v sousedství a nabízí tak i inspiraci pro možnou intervenci v komunitě usilující o pozitivní přijetí věznice jejími sousedy.

Abstract:

This empiric study follows the American research in communities living around prisons and aims to verify their findings of anxiety connected with prison in Czech conditions. Feelings of anxiety connected with the institution of prison and it’s functioning in the neighbourhood which were described in USA, this study extends with possible anxiety connected to specific characteristics of space surrounding the prison. Possibility of these feelings was formulated according to theories of Environmental Psychology, in the frame of streams Space syntax and Theory of routine activity. This study therefore aims to describe wider range of anxiety and also to connect them with possible influencing factors, which were chosen as physical and psychological distance of prison to people living in the neighbourhood and then as the trust in neighbours and the felt social control in neighbourhood. The study considers also other influencing variables (age, sex, taking care of a child etc.) The research was carried out as a questionnaire survey on a sample of 207 subjects and it resulted in an assumption that the anxiety connected with the presence of the prison in the neighbourhood is felt slightly, the majority of community this anxieties did not reported. Concerning the anxiety connected with the functioning of the prison, women and people between the age of 25 and 50 felt them more strongly. Among anxieties felt as the strongest was the anxiety of visitors, then the anxiety associated with the possibility of escape or the possibility of criminal activity of escaped prisoners. The anxieties connected with specific characteristics of space surrounding the prison were felt the strongest among people between the age of 15 and 18 and among men; the anxiety of movement around the prison at night was outstanding. The anxieties were connected with both measured independent variables – physical and psychological distance of prison. More distant neighbours as well as subjects with higher psychological distance from prison felt the anxieties stronger. It was assumed that psychological distance is more important influencing factor then the physical distance, in detail the knowledge about prison and it’s inclusion in the cognitive map are important. Nevertheless among measured independent variables it was felt social control in neighbourhood which influenced the most felt anxieties. People who did not trust their neighbours and doubted their social control felt the anxieties stronger. The research was carried out as a quantitative study based on a measuring of correlations and differences between groups, so it’s not fully possible to assume clear relations of causes and effects. It offers the first insight in a topic in Czech conditions and also offers possible context of felt anxieties. It reveals a connection of anxieties to the characteristics of community and also to the way of communication about a prison with community, so that it can inspire a prospective intervention in communities seeking to support a positive acceptance of a prison.
