Analysis of indigenous tattoo techniques and their usage possibilities in contemporary tattoo practice

Abstract:

The presented thesis deals with the analysis of the original tattoo techniques, tools and the possibilities of their use in terms of contem-porary tattoo practice. In addition to the traditional methods, it also introduces the methods of contemporary tattoo practice, i.e. the electric tattoo machine and the handpoke method popularized in recent years. The main aim of the thesis was to carry out an experiment in which different tools and procedures were subjected to experimental tattooing, with the intention of finding potentially the most suitable and effective one. Tools from botanical, animal and stone sources were examined, along with a modern tattoo needle. Methods of investigation were based on qualitative and metric analysis. The results showed that the greater hardness and less brittleness of the materials imparted the necessary effectiveness for tattooing, which was not achieved by the plant-sourced tools, which were broken and excessively blunted sev-eral times during the experiment. Nevertheless, the tattooing potential of each of the instruments tested was confirmed, based on the ability of the tip to pierce the skin and embed pigment. Obsidian artifacts, tattoo needles, and animal bones performed the best, and both techniques examined succeeded, with the obsidian-tipped incisions surpassing all expectations and competing strongly with the only modern tattoo tool, the steel needle.

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá analýzou původních tetovacích technik, nástrojů a možností jejich využití z hlediska současné tetovací praxe. Kromě tradičních metod představuje také metody současné tetovací praxe, tj. elektrický tetovací strojek a metodu handpoke, která se zpopularizovala v posledních letech. Hlavním cílem diplomové práce bylo provedení experimentu, při kterém byly různé nástroje a postupy podrobeny experimentálnímu tetování se záměrem najít potenciálně nejvhodnější a nejúčinnější. Zkoumány byly nástroje z botanických, zvířecích a kamenných zdrojů, spolu s moderní tetovací jehlou. Metody zkoumání byly založeny na kvalitativní a metrické analýze. Z výsledků vyplývá, že větší tvrdost a menší křehkost materiálů dodala tetování potřebnou účinnost, které nedosahovaly nástroje z rostlinných zdrojů, jež se během experimentu několikrát zlomily a nadměrně otupily. Přesto byl potvrzen tetovací potenciál každého z testovaných nástrojů na základě schopnosti hrotu proniknout kůží a vložit do ní pigment. Nejlépe si vedly obsidiánové artefakty, tetovací jehly a zvířecí kosti, a zároveň uspěli obě zkoumané techniky, přičemž řezy s obsidiánovým hrotem předčily všechna očekávání a silně konkurovaly jedinému modernímu tetovacímu nástroji, ocelové jehle.
