Handheld camera work of Ota Kopřiva

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je popsat osobitý kameramanský styl Oty Kopřivy a zasadit jej do kontextu Československé a Evropské kameramanské tvorby. Teoretická část stručně shrne životopisné a filmografické údaje Oty Kopřivy a popíše vztah kameramana k obdobím kinematografie, které daly za vznik realistickému a expresivnímu využití nástroje ruční kamery v dokumentární a hrané tvorbě. Dále se teoretická část zaměří na účinek tohoto dynamizujícího nástroje z tvůrčího a diváckého hlediska. Praktickou část bude tvořit analýza kamerového nástroje ruční kamery ve filmech Co je vám, doktore? (1984), Jako jed (1985), Antonyho šance (1986) a Bony a Klid (1987). Autor práce bude sledovat vývoj tohoto nástroje a jeho užití k podpoře režijního záměru napříč kameramanskou tvorbou Oty Kopřivy. Dostupné informace se autor pokusí doplnit také prostřednictvím hloubkových rozhovorů s žijícími pamětníky.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe Ota Kopřiva's distinctive cinematographic style and to put it in the context of Czechoslovak and European cinematography. The theoretical part briefly summarizes the life and work of Ota Kopřiva and describes the relationship of the cinematographer to the periods of cinema that gave rise to the realistic and expressive use of a handheld camera in documentary and fiction film. The theoretical part also focuses on the effect of this dynamic tool from the points of view of both the creator and the spectator. The practical part consists of an analysis of the use of a handheld camera in the films Co je vám, doktore? (1984), Jako jed (1985), Antonyho šance (1986) and Bony a Klid (1987). The author of the thesis will follow the development of the tool and its use to support the director’s intent across the cinematographic work of Ota Kopriva. The author will also attempt to supplement the available information with in-depth interviews with cinematographer’s contemporaries.
