From Xanadu to Wikipedia: Utopia, the ideal and current reality of hypertext ecyclopedia

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce Od Xanadu k Wikipedii: utopie, ideál a současná realita hypertextové encyklopedie se zabývá aspekty původní a současné podoby nového média, kterým je hypertextové encyklopedie. Jako předmět analýzy, komparace a reflexe, prováděné optikou teorie nových médií, slouží dva hypertextové encyklopedické projekty. Oba projekty vznikly na základě idey kolaborativního autorství a předpokladu, že potenciál hypertextu a nových médií obecně promění analogovou encyklopedii v nové, digitální médium s většími možnostmi. V první části práce je z dnešního úhlu pohledu jako utopické prezentováno pojetí hypertextové literární knihovny Xanadu, jak bylo koncipováno Theodorem Nelsonem. Druhá část práce analyzuje současnou hypertextovou encykopedii Wikipedii, především pak její technické a společenské aspekty. Výsledkem práce je jednak komparace obou podob hypertextové encyklopedie, druhak vymezení mechanismů a vlivů, které vlastnosti nových médií limitují, dále pak rizik a nezamýšlených důsledků, které s sebou vývoj nových médií přináší.

Abstract:

Bachelor’s dissertation: From Xanadu to Wikipedia: Utopia, the idealand current reality of hypertext ecyclopedia deals with aspects of the original and current forms of new media, which is hypertext ecyclopedia. As the subject of analysis, comparison and reflection, by using the theory of new media, are two hypertext ecyclopedic projects. Both projets arised from the idea of collaborative authorshiup and the assumption that the potencial of hypertext and new media in general, turns analog encyclopedia in the new media with more possibilities. The first part is presented from today’s point of view as an utopian concept of literary hypertext library, as conceived by Theodor Nelson. The second part analyze the current hypertext encyclopedia Wikipedia, especially its technical and social aspects. Result of this work is both a comparison of both forms of encyclopedia and determination of definition of mechanisms and factors that limit the performance of new media, as well as risks and unintended consequences that come with the development of new media.
