Contribution to the history of economic infrastructure: the Suez and Panama Canal

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce „Příspěvek k dějinám infrastruktury: Suezský a Panamský kanál" je popis a analýza dvou velkých infrastrukturních projektů. Zvláštní důraz bude zejména kladen zdroje financování, návratnost těchto investic a zamýšlené i nezamýšlené efekty, spojené s jejich vybudováním. První část této práce je věnována charakteristice výchozí situace obou těchto projektů s ohledem na kulturní, historické a politické aspekty. Další část je popisuje rozdílné způsoby a přístupy k finančním zdrojům, s ohledem na jejich průběh a s ním spojená rizika. Zaměřuje se také na průběh samotného procesu stavby, úspěšností jejich realizace s ohledem alokaci vynaložených prostředků, politicko-společenské a technické změny. Ve třetí části jsou diskutovány výše zmíněné externality, ale také následné ekonomické a historické dopady pro tyto dvě země. Součástí závěrečné části je shrnutí výsledků a zdůraznění nejdůležitějších zjištění.

Abstract:

The subject of the thesis "Contribution to the history of infrastructure: the Suez and the Panama Canal" is a description and analysis of the two large infrastructure projects. A special emphasis will particularly be placed on the funding sources, return on these investments and the intended and unintended effects associated with their construction. The first part is devoted to the characterization of the initial situation of both these projects with respect to cultural, historical and political aspects. The next part describes the different methods and approaches to financial resources with regard to their course and the associated risks. It also focuses on the progress of the construction process, the success of their implementation with regard to the allocation of the expanded funds, socio-political and technological changes. The third part discusses the externalities mentioned above but also the subsequent economic and historical impacts on these two countries. The final section summarizes the results and highlights the main findings.
