Construction of the Identity of a Learned Magician in Arbatel (1575) and Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy (1559) and Its Relation to Demonology

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na rozbor identity učeného mága v anonymních textech Arbatel (1575) a Čtvrtá kniha okultní filozofie (1559), které byly vydány v 16. století jako tištěné knihy navazující na pozdně středověkou tradici rituálně magických manuskriptů. Zatímco identita pozdně středověkého mága se podle Franka Klaassena odvozovala z ideálů identity univerzitního učence, u obou textů z 16. století lze pozorovat posun směrem k identitě renesančního znalce tajemství. Tuto identitu lze do značné míry charakterizovat jako identitu odborníka působícího v rámci ekonomiky tajemství tak, jak je popisována Danielem Jüttem. Zároveň autoři obou textů v souladu se svým křesťanským přesvědčením kladou důraz na legitimizaci magie pomocí renesančního narativu o starověké moudrosti, jak na něj poukázal Wouter J. Haanegraaff. Nejedná se však o vznik nové identity sekulárního mága, ale spíše o vytvoření jejích předpokladů. Podobně jako v pozdně středověkých rituálně magických textech je v analyzovaných pramenech předpokladem magické praxe uchazečova zbožnost, jsou však určeny výrazně rozmanitějšímu okruhu laiků včetně těch, kteří se živili fyzickou prací, což se projevuje ve zkrácení některých částí rituálů, omezení citací na Bibli i menším důrazu na kontakt s knězem. V obou pramenech je patrný vliv dvorské kultury. Z pohledu hlavního proudu teologie byla rituální magie považována za čarodějnictví a byla ilegální. Arbatel v reakci na tuto kritiku konstruuje negativní protějšek svatého mága, kterým je kakomág, zatímco ve Čtvrté knize okultní filozofie se existence negativní identity mága vůbec nepřipouští. Tento rozdíl je důsledkem odlišného pojetí mága u obou autorů i jejich rozdílného přístupu k magii celkově.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the textual images of identity of the learned magician in the anonymous texts Arbatel of Magick (1575) and Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy (1559) published in 16th century but linked to the late medieval tradition of ritual magic manuscripts. While the identity of the late medieval magician was derived, according to Frank Klaassen, from ideals of the learned identity of a university scholar, in both analysed texts we observe a clear shift toward the identity of Renaissance professor of secrets. This identity can be characterised as identity of an expert operating inside the “economy of secrets” as formulated by Daniel Jütte. Both authors also legitimize their magic with reference to Renaissance narratives of ancient wisdom in accordance with their Christian sentiments, as formulated by Wouter J. Haanegraaff. This shift does not amount to the birth of a new identity of a secular magician, although it can be considered its prerequisite. Similarly to late medieval manuscripts of ritual magic, both texts presume that the magician has to be a pious Christian, although they are addressed to a wider variety of lay readers including some manual workers. As a result, some parts of magical rituals get shorter, references to the Bible are fewer and a frequent contact with priest is stressed less. Both texts are influenced by courtly culture. From the point of view of mainstream Christian theology, this kind of magic was illegal and considered to be witchcraft. In reaction to this, Arbatel of Magick suggests a negative identity of the cacomagus as opposed to the pious magician; by contrast, the Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy only refers to the pious magician. This can be considered as a result of different conceptions of the magician and of ritual magic itself as presented in both analysed texts.
