Republic of South Africa and apartheid

Abstract:

This thesis aims to create a balanced outlook on the events that transpired in South Africa, chiefly on the policy of apartheid. Considerable attention is paid to the ambivalent relations between Great Britain and apartheid South Africa. The Union of South Africa was created in 1910 as a direct result of the 2nd Boer War. The union, led by pro-Britain Prime Minister Smuts, was led into two ?foreign and distant? world wars which led to a decisive victory of the National Party in 1948. That year is considered to be a beginning of an intensified racial segregation and later of an official state policy of apartheid. Apartheid was implemented in such a way as it separated different ethnic groups and then stripped them of their human rights and moved them to their respective reservations. The gradual intensity of pressure of the international community as well as the homeland resistance led firstly to ambitious refoms and later to the dissolution of apartheid and free elections. The power was shifted to the African National Congress, originally a resistance group, which has steered the direction of South Africa to this day. The thesis also examines the present socio-political situation and offers an insight into a possible future development.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vyvážená analýza událostí v Jižní Africe s důrazem na politiku apartheidu. Pozornost je věnována zejména ambivalentnímu vztahu Velké Británie k apartheidu. Jihoafrická unie vznikla v roce 1910 jako výsledek druhé Búrské války. Británii nakloněný premiér Smuts přivedl zemi dvakrát do ?cizích a vzdálených? světových válek, což vedlo k jasnému vítězství Národní strany v roce 1948. Tento rok je považován za počátek zesílené rasové segregace a později státní politiky apartheidu. Ta byla implementována tak, aby cíleně oddělila etnické menšiny, postupně jim odebírala lidská práva a zároveň pro ně vytvořila rezervace, kam by tyto menšiny byly přesunuty. Stupňující se tlak mezinárodního společenství a domácího odboje vedl nejprve k odvážným reformám a později i k rozpadu apartheidu a svobodným volbám. Moci se ujal Africký národní kongres, původně vůdčí odbojová organizace, který určuje směřování Jihoafrické republiky dodnes. Práce navíc mapuje současnou sociopolitickou situaci v zemi a ukazuje předpokládaný výhled do budoucnosti.
