Ugliness of monsters in chosen titles from the 19.Century

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje vztahu mezi fyzickou či duševní ohavností a jednáním literárních postav v literatuře 19. století. K tomuto účelu budou zkoumána díla, v nichž vystupují nadpřirozené nebo nepřirozené bytosti. Tyto bytosti budou v práci charakterizovány po stránce fyzického vzhledu a po stránce osobnostní. Pokusíme se podat vysvětlení principů, na jejichž základě považujeme konkrétní monstrum za ošklivé. Pozornost bude věnována také porovnání děsu způsobovanému nepřirozeným vzezřením a nemorálním jednáním. Jde tedy o to zjistit, která ošklivost, zda duševní nebo fyzická, slouží jako zdroj zděšení a strachu.

Abstract:

This thesis applies to the relationship between physical or psychical awfulness and acting of the figures in the literature of 19.Century. For this intent will be examined works, in witch act supernatural or unnatural beings. These creatures will be described from the side of their physical look and from the side of their personality. I will try to explain the principles, on witch base we the concrete monster consider as ugly. We also pay attention to the fright, witch is caused by unnatural look or amoral acting. The thing is, to identify, if the psychical or physical ugliness serve as the source of scare and fear.
