Use of nonmetric multidimensional scaling for data processing of biological communities.

Abstract:

Pro analýzu dat ekologických společenstev je hojně užívaná mnohorozměrná ordinační metoda zvaná nemetrické vícerozměrné škálování (NMDS). Tato práce se zabývá vyhodnocením vlivu různých kombinací transformací či standardizací dat a metrik vzdáleností nebo indexů nepodobnosti na výsledek NMDS. Analýza byla prováděna na datech o společenstvech měkkýšů. Na základě výsledků této práce se jako nejvhodnější úpravy dat před použitím NMDS jeví binarizace v kombinaci se Sørensenovým nebo Jaccardovým koeficientem a logaritmické transformace ve spojení s Brayovým–Curtisovým koeficientem nepodobnosti.

Abstract:

A widely used multivariate ordination method for analysing ecological community data is called non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). This thesis is concerned on evaluating the effect of various combinations of data transformations or standardizations and distance metrics or dissimilarity coefficients on the results of NMDS. The analysis was performed on snail community data. Based on the results of this work, binarization in combination with the Sørensen or Jaccard coefficients and logarithmic transformations in combination with the Bray–Curtis dissimilarity coefficient appear to be the most appropriate data treatments prior to NMDS.
