An Explanation of the Inverted-U Relationship between Profitability and Innovation

Abstract:

Tato dizertace formuluje dva inovační modely, které jsou schopné vysvětlit vztah mezi ziskovostí a inovacemi ve tvaru obráceného U a vztahy mezi ziskovostí a rozdíly mezi produktivitou jednotlivých firem v daném odvětví, které nachází Aghion et al. (2005) a Hashmi (2005). Základní model (basic model) předkládá jednoduché a obecné vysvětlení těchto stylizovaných faktů. V základním modelu si jednotlivé firmy volí takové výdaje na výzkum a vývoj, při kterých maximalizují očekávané zisky za předpokladu, že je velikost těchto výdajů do určité míry omezena hodnotou jejich zisků. Prospektově teoretický model (prospect-theory model) předkládá specifické vysvětlení stylizovaných faktů, které obsahuje behaviorální teorii manažerského rozhodování. Manažeři si v tomto modelu volí výdaje na výzkum a vývoj podle preferencí reprezentovaných hodnotovou funkcí v teorii prospektů. Pro určité hodnoty parametrů generují oba modely predikce, které odpovídají vztahům, které nachází Aghion et al. (2005) a Hashmi (2005). Tato dizertace také ukazuje, že oba modely vytváří realistické předpovědi pro širší rozmezí parametrů kolem těchto specifických hodnot.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I introduce two models of innovation that are able to explain the inverted-U relationship between profitability and innovation, and the findings of Aghion et al. (2005) and Hashmi (2005) related to the relationship between profitability and the dispersion of productivity in the industry. The basic model provides a simple and general explanation of the empirical findings. In the basic model firms choose R&D expenditures that maximize their expected profits under the assumption that R&D expenditures of firms might be constrained by the size of their profits. The prospect-theory model provides a more specific explanation of the empirical findings, which includes a behavioral model of managerial decision-making. Managers in the model choose R&D expenditures according to the preferences represented by the prospect-theory value function. For specific sets of parameter values, both models generate predictions that correspond to the empirical findings of Aghion et al. (2005) and Hashmi (2005). Finally, I show in the thesis that both models generate realistic predictions for a wider range of parameter combinations around the specific parameter values.
