Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá vystupováním Amerických politiků v televizním žánru zvaném talk shows, konkrétně ve formátu nočního zábavního pořadu, ve kterém primárně vystupují populární celebrity. Hlavním cílem je provést analýzu vybraných rozhovorů a zaměřit se způsoby, jak postava politika ovlivňuje průběh talk show. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část, přičemž teoretická část (Kapitola 2) nejprve definuje talk show. Dále jsou talk shows klasifikovány dle nejčastějších kritérií, přičemž hlavní důraz je kladem na noční zábavní pořady jakožto předměty analýzy. Na konci kapitoly je ve stručnosti představen vývoj žánru talk shows. V praktické části je nejprve popsán vybraný materiál, který bude předmětem samotné analýzy, a metody konverzační analýzy a sociopragmatiky, které do velké míry inspirovaly analýzu provedenou v této práci. Dále jsou stanoveny předpoklady a cíle práce, které následuje popis dvou vybraných shows, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon a Jimmy Kimmel Live! Samotná analytická část pak zkoumá čtyři stanovené jevy, jmenovitě turn-taking, témata diskuze, podílení se diváků a různé jazykové nástroje (Kapitola 4). Pátá kapitola se zabývá trendy komoditizace, personalizace a obyčejnosti, které jsou spojovány s vystoupením celebrit v talk shows. Z analýzy vyplývá, že politici vystupují v talk shows za účelem vlastní propagace a oslovování potenciálních voličů. Všechny další výsledky analýzy jsou shrnuty v závěru práce.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the appearance of American politicians in talk shows, specifically, in the late-night entertainment format primarily designated for popular celebrities. The aim of the thesis is to conduct a thorough analysis of selected late-night talk show interviews and explore the role of a politician within the talk show interaction. The thesis is divided into the theoretical and analytical part. In the theoretical part (Chapter 2), firstly, the genre of the talk show is defined and secondly, the classification of the talk shows is introduced with a special focus on the late-night entertainment talk show format that is the subject of the forthcoming analysis. Thirdly, the chapter is concluded with a brief socio-historical background of the talk shows. In the analytical part, the description of materials and methods is provided in Chapter 3, with a specification of Conversation Analysis and sociopragmatics as two inspiring methods chosen for the analysis. After that, research objectives are set forth and followed by the description of two selected talk shows, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live! The other two sections (Chapter 4 and 5) consist of practical analysis of selected interviews while Chapter 4 explores four defined phenomena, namely turn-taking, topics of discussion, audience participation and linguistic devices. Chapter 5 then defines the phenomena of commodification, personalization, and ordinariness, that are typical for celebrity shows and explores the relation of the politician to that phenomena. In the end, it is concluded that politicians use the talks shows for self-promotion and attraction of the potential voters. All findings are then summarized in the conclusion.
