Critique of Nature's Disenchantment and an Alternative Perspective in the Works of J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tím, jak fantasy spisovatelé J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) a C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) ve svých dílech reagují na odkouzlený pohled na přírodu, který se v euroatlantickém prostředí prosadil v době osvícenství a dodnes je součástí dominantního paradigmatu moderní společnosti. Práce ukazuje, že tento pohled na přírodu, který redukuje její hodnotu na užitek pro člověka, považují nejen oba spisovatelé, ale také mnozí environmentalisté za jednu z hlavních překážek harmonického soužití lidstva s přírodou a jeho změnu za důležitý krok na cestě k udržitelné společnosti. Práce se v kontextu postojů a faktorů, které mohly Tolkiena a Lewise ovlivnit zabývá jejich myšlenkou, že fantasy literatura může přispět k „očarování“ přírody v očích čtenáře, tedy k obnově pohledu na přírodu, který jí připisuje hodnotu o sobě, nezávislou na užitku pro člověka. Zároveň s pomocí analýzy primární a sekundární literatury zkoumá, jak s „očarováním“ a kritikou odkouzlení oba spisovatelé pracují ve svých příbězích. Práce ukazuje na příkladu děl Tolkiena a Lewise, jak může fantasy literatura přispět k obnově takového pohledu na přírodu, který je podle mnoha environmentalistů předpokladem pro udržitelné soužití lidstva s přírodou. Upozorňuje přitom i na některé problematické aspekty jejich příběhů, jako je zjednodušující dualita odkouzleného a očarovaného pohledu.

Abstract:

This master's thesis is concerned with how fantasy writers J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) and C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) react in their works to the disenchanted view of nature, which broke through in the Euro-Atlantic environment during the Enlightenment and became a part of the dominant paradigm of modern society. The work shows that this view of nature, which reduces its value to human benefit, perceive not only by both writers, but also by many environmentalists as one of the main obstacles to the harmonious coexistence of mankind with nature – and its change as an important step on the way towards a sustainable society. In the context of the attitudes and factors that could have influenced Tolkien and Lewis, the work deals with their idea that fantasy literature can contribute to the "enchantment" of nature in the eyes of the reader, i.e. to the renewal of a view of nature that ascribes to it a value of its own, independent of its utility to humans. At the same time, with the help of the analysis of primary and secondary literature, it examines how both writers work with "enchantment" and criticism of disenchantment in their stories. Using the example of the works of Tolkien and Lewis, the thesis shows how fantasy literature can contribute to the renewal of such a view of nature, which, according to many environmentalists, is a prerequisite for sustainable human coexistence with nature. At the same time, it points out some problematic aspects of their stories, such as the simplistic duality of disenchanted and enchanted view.
