Effect of the specific foot exercise on the gait dynamic variables in older adults

Abstract:

Úvod: Populace stárne a kvalita života seniorů je velmi aktuálním tématem. V procesu stárnutí dochází ke zhoršování chůze a jejich parametrů, ale taky ke zhoršování funkce nohy, která hraje v krokovém cyklu významnou roli. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda intervence zaměřená na oblast nohy ovlivní dynamické parametry chůze u seniorů, jejich funkční mobilitu a soběstačnost. Metodika: Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 16 členek spolku JsemSen s průměrným věkem 72,88 let. Ženy byly na vstupu podrobeny analýze chůze na softwaru zebris, absolvovaly Time Up and Go Test (TUG) a Time Up and Go Test with Cognitive Task (TUGCT), nakonec jim byly změřeny rozsahy pohybu v hlezenních kloubech a v metatarzofalangeálním (MTP) kloubu palců. Probandky podstoupily tříměsíční intervenci zaměřenou na posílení, protažení a zlepšení celkové funkce nohy. Výsledky: Po intervenci nedošlo ke statisticky významné změně laterální symetrie výchylek COP, šířky kroku, času v TUG a TUGCT. Naopak došlo ke statisticky významnému zvýšení rozsahu pohybu v hlezenním kloubu do dorzální flexe (p < 0,05) a v MTP kloubu palce do abdukce (p < 0,05). Rozsah pohybu v hlezenním kloubu do plantární flexe, v MTP kloubu palce do flexe a extenze se u probandek významně nezměnil.

Abstract:

Background: Due to the ageing of the population, the quality of life of the elderly is a very up-to-date topic. During ageing, there is a deterioration in gait and its parameters, but also in the function of the foot, which plays an important role in the gait cycle. The main goal of this paper was to find out, if the foot exercise programme would influence the dynamic gait parameters in the elderly and their functional mobility and self-sufficiency. Methods: Sixteen elderly women from JsemSen with an average age of 72,88 years attended this research. Before the intervention, the gait analysis using zebris, the Time Up and Go Test (TUG), and the Time Up and Go Test with Cognitive Task (TUGCT) were performed. Furthermore, the range of motion of the ankle joint and the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint was measured. Women then underwent a three-month foot exercise programme aimed to strengthen, stretch and improve the overall function of the foot. Results: After the intervention, there were no statistically significant changes in the lateral symmetry of the COP, the step width and time in TUG and TUGCT. On the other hand, there was a statistically significant difference in the range of motion of the ankle to dorsal flexion (p < 0,05) and of the first MTP joint to abduction (p < 0,05). The range of motion to plantar flexion in the ankle and to flexion and extension in the first MTP joint did not change significantly.
