Digital Divide a děti z dětského domova

I interconnect two issues - media literacy and new media, particularly new information and communication technologies (ICT). I focus especially on the abilities to use ICT by children at the age of 12 -16 years, coming from a specific social environment Children's Homes. Thanks to my personal experience with those children I can suggest the basic premise: Children from Children's Home have limited access to ICT and lower media literacy, which forms so-called Digital Divide between them and the children from nuclear families (I define this phrase as the composition of the father, mother and 1-3 children). I attempt to verify or disaprove this premise and explore potential obstacles in direct interaction with the children's peers caused by the Digital Divide. Hence the main aim of this work is to explore potential differences in access to ICT and in using them between the two mentioned groups of children and to explore impact of social environment where they live on the Digital Divide.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je případovou studií zaměřenou na klienty vybraného dětského domova ve věku 12 až 17 let, přičemž jejím hlavním cílem je výzkum Digital Divide, a to prostřednictvím explorace užívání informačních a komunikačních technologií (ICT) danými dospívajícími dětmi. Užitými technikami sběru dat bylo zúčastněné pozorování, polostrukturované individuální rozhovory a virtuální etnografie. Získaná data byla v rámci analýzy rozdělená do čtyř tematických bloků, v nichž je věnována pozornost charakteristice zkoumaného dětského domova a jeho klientů, jejich fyzickému i motivačnímu přístupu k jednotlivým druhům ICT, míře digitální gramotnosti i způsobům užívání ICT s bližším zaměřením na užívání sociálních sítí. V diskuzi jsou nejpodstatnější zjištění shrnuta a srovnána se sekundárními daty. Účelem komparace je zjistit rozdílnosti ve způsobech užívání ICT dětmi z dětského domova a dětmi žijícími mimo prostředí ústavu a tím i existenci digitální propasti mezi danými dvěma skupinami dětí.

Abstract:

This thesis is a case study focused on clients at the age of 12-17 of one chosen children's home. The main object of the thesis is a Digital Divide research fulfilled by exploring the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by adolescent from the children's home. The used techniques were involved observation, semi structured individual interviews and virtual ethnography. In the analysis the gained data were divided into four thematic groups. The analysis includes the characteristics of the children's home and its clients, their physical and motivational access to ICTs, the level of their digital literacy and their usage of ICTs and especially usage of social networking sites. In the discussion, the most important fidings are summarized and compared with secondary data. The purpose of the comparison is to find differences in the ICTs usage of children from children's home and children living outside the institute's environment. Therefore the existence of Digital Divide between these two groups of children will be also discovered.
