Digital Transformation based on Business Process Modeling: A Case Study in SAP

Abstract:

Technologický pokrok, v posledních letech, tlačí kupředu myšlenku digitální transformace. Je to způsob, jak změnit business, tak, aby využíval technologický pokrok a poskytoval lepší přidanou hodnotu pro zákazníky. Většina dostupných návodů se zabývá transformaci business modelů, ale jen málo se jich věnuje procesům. Tato práce se zaměřuje na digitalizaci procesů, které přináší přidanou hodnotu, pokud transformace celého business modelu není možnost nebo není zcela nutná. Na základě výzkumu provedeného formou literární rešerše, je představeno teoretické pozadí digitální transformace s jejími dopady a přezkoumáním dostupných plánů. Na základě tohoto je navržen nový model se zaměřením na digitální transformaci procesů, spolu s jeho důkladným popisem a základním návodem, jak jej použít. Navrhovaný model je ověřen na případové studii v reálném životě ve spolupráci se společností SAP, kde jeden z nepraktických HR procesu bude digitalizován zavedením webová aplikace, která nahradí papírový proces. Aplikace navrhovaného modelu byla úspěšná a nový proces obdržel pozitivní zpětnou vazbu. Aplikace zjednodušila proces a ušetřila čas. Celý postup byl zdokumentován a může být použit jako referenční model a jeho průvodce. Případová studie ukazuje, že digitální transformace procesů je relevantním tématem a měla by být více prozkoumána. Model, který byl představen, by měl být dále testován v praxi a může být odrazovým můstkem pro následující verze.

Abstract:

Technological progress in the recent years, is pushing forward the idea of digital transformation. It is a way to change business, so it can leverage the technological advancements, to provide a better value to its customers. Most of the digital transformation frameworks address the transformation of business models, but there are not many available, that provide guideline on a smaller scale. This thesis focuses on digitalisation of processes, which brings value, if a transformation of the whole business model is not an available option or if it’s not necessary. Based on the research conducted in form of literature review, theoretical background of digital transformation is introduced, along with its impact and review of available roadmaps. Based on that, a new model is proposed, that gives and overview of digital transformation of processes, along with thorough description and basic step-by-step guide on how it is intended to be used. Proposed model is validated on a real-life case study in cooperation with SAP, where one of the impractical HR processes will be digitalised by the introduction of web application, that will replace the paper based process. The proposed model application was successful and the new process received positive feedback. It sped up the process, saved time and made it more available. The whole procedure was documented and can be used as a reference along the model and its guide. Case study shows, that digital transformation of processes is a relevant topic and should be explored more, with the thesis being a solid starting point. The model, that the thesis introduced should be further tested in practice and it can be a stepping stone for newer versions in the future.
