Ethics in business and its application in hospitality

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je Etika a její uplatňování v oblasti hotelnictví. Bakalářská práce je členěna na část teoretickou a část aplikační. V teoretické části jsem se zabývala definicí etiky obecně a dále podnikatelské etiky jako její specifické oblasti, vývojem podnikatelské etiky, principy a nástroji etického řízení, zvláště etickými kodexy a etikou v oblasti hotelnictví. Smyslem této části práce je mimo jiné poukázat na fakt, že zavedení etických standardů do podnikání může pro hotel za vhodných podmínek představovat v dlouhodobém horizontu reálně vyjádřitelný přínos. V aplikační části jsem provedla dotazníkové šetření mezi manažery malých a středních hotelů v Praze, a to prostřednictvím emailu a přímého dotazování. Cílem toho dotazníkového šetření bylo zjistit, jak je podnikatelská etika vnímána, jestli hotely používají některé nástroje podnikatelské etiky, jak je etika v jejich praxi uplatňována, případně jaké mají s jejím uplatňováním problémy. Z dotazníkového šetření vyplynulo, že většina respondentů považuje podnikatelskou etiku za důležitou, avšak stále si nejsou jisti jejími praktickými přínosy. V průzkumu bylo také zjištěno, že u většiny hotelů se vyskytlo v praxi určité neetické chování. Na základě analýzy teoretických přístupů, východisek a empiricky získaných nálezů (dat), byly vytvořeny konkrétní návrhy a doporučení, reflektující současné trendy, směry a potřeby konstituování etiky v podnikání a společenské praxi.

Abstract:

The theme of this thesis is Ethics in business and its application in the hotel industry. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, I dealt with the definition of ethics in general and business ethics as its specific branch in particular, historical development of business ethics, principles and instruments of ethical management, particularly ethical codes, and business ethics in the hotel industry. The purpose of this part is among others to stress the fact that the implementation of ethical standards in business may under appropriate conditions in the long term constitute a substatial contribution for the hotel. In the practical part, I conducted a questionnaire survey among managers of small and mid-size hotels in Prague either by email or by direct contact. The aim of this questionnaire survey was to determine how the business ethics is perceived, whether the hotels apply any of the instruments of business ethics, how they apply the ethics in practice and whether they face any problems while applying them. The questionnaire survey showed that most of the respondents considered business ethics to be important but they are still not sure about its practical benefits. It was also found out that there has been some unethical conduct in most of the hotels. Concrete proposals and recommendations, that reflect current trends, directions and needs of the business ethics in the business and social practice, were proposed based on the analysis of existing theoretical approaches, foundations and empirically obtained findings (data).
